Sat. 30th August: Melksham CC vs Bishops Cannings CC
Match Abandoned
Melksham CC’s 1st XI have finished the season as WCCL Division 2 champions, securing a first ever league title for the club and ensuring that the team will be playing their cricket in Division 1 next season.
League glory was confirmed after the 1s final day clash away to title rivals Bishops Cannings was abandoned due to rain.
Melksham had come into the match with a slight advantage in terms of points; however, it was the hosts who came firing out the blocks early doors, with Cannings’ opening pair of James Page and Dave Bromley both hammering quick fire hundreds to fire their team to a total of 200-0 within 24 overs.
Despite this brilliant start from Cannings, Melksham did then manage something of a fight back however. Six quick wickets, including four from skipper Adam Mitchell, helped to claw some momentum back into the away side’s favour, with Cannings reaching 256/6. At this point the rain came in, eventually putting an end to the contest and ensuring that Melksham would finish top of the pile in Division 2 for 2025.
The 2nd XI unfortunately have not enjoyed as successful a season after finishing in the bottom 2 of Division 8. Although their final match of the season was also abandoned due to rain, they were at least able to end the season on something of a positive note by bowling mid-table Swindon Royal Challengers out for 99.
A pumped-up Chris Long got his side off to a fast start with four early wickets, before three wickets each from Yugant Bhatt and skipper Tom Watling helped to finish off their opposition for just under 100, although the rain would deny the 2s the chance to try and claim a win on the final day of the season.
The 3rd XI meanwhile finished the season in a respectable sixth place in Division 10. Their end of season clash away to Calne 4s was also a victim of the weather, although before the rain came in, they were looking like a good prospect for a final day win.
Tim Edwards was in imperious form, finishing unbeaten on 85 with his side on 161/1 before play was abandoned.
