AT its last meeting the Atworth History Group welcomed Nick Goodall, who gave an interesting talk about the history of Stonar School from when it first opened in Kent to the present day in Atworth.
Organisers said, “The school was established in 1895 as a girls’ school at Stour House in Sandwich, Kent, and adopted the Stonar name when it moved to the larger Stonar House, also in Sandwich. The school moved to Cottles House in Atworth when the Sandwich premises were requisitioned by the Ministry of Defence in 1939.
“On Monday 6th February Terry Bracher will give a talk entitled Should have taken the medicine – a short guide to horrible remedies, cures and deaths in Wiltshire. This promises to be an interesting, if somewhat gruesome evening
. “We meet in Atworth Village Hall at 7:30pm. Visitors are very welcome at the modest cost of £5 for the evening, or you may wish to join for an annual subscription of £15.”
