A horticultural treasure hunt, in the form of a ‘hunt for the red roses,’ will take place in Melksham to help mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.
Event organisers explain, “Melksham is full of streets with names of flowers or trees (Daisy Close, Heather Avenue, Hornbean Crescent etc.) Every street with a horticultural name will have a red rose displayed in a house somewhere along it – then it is up to contestants to find them.
“The Crazy About Knitting group has knitted a large number of red roses, the plan is that there will be one of these in each street. The official entry forms will be a available from the Town Hall and the Tourist Information Centre from mid-May at a cost of 50p each. The winner will be announced at the Picnic In the Park for the Queen’s birthday on Sunday June 12th, with suitably floral prizes for winners who have found all the red roses across Melksham.”
Terri Welch, one of the organisers of the scheme said, “Now we need your help. If you live in one of the many roads in Melksham with the name of a flower or a tree and are prepared to show a red rose, please make yourself known to Miriam, at the Town Hall and she can issue you with your rose and instructions. The idea of the hunt is that people can get to know our town, and discover roads they haven’t been down before, also see some lovely gardens as well.”
