A LOCAL knitting club has raised £466 for the British Red Cross by selling their handmade items in The Co-operative Funeralcare in Melksham.
Throughout the year, the group has been busy knitting a whole host of items including toys, baby clothes, blankets, cushions and their famous knitted poppies which they sell for The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
Rose Purdon, who started the club said, “We try and meet at least once a month to knit together, but there are ladies who knit all the time at home. Helen Burns for instance doesn’t come to the group but has donated lots of items to be sold.
“We very much enjoy knitting and also raising money for charity. With the support of The Co-operative Funeralcare in Melksham, we have managed to raise £466 for the British Red Cross and £150 this year for the poppy appeal. The Co-op donate £10 a month for us to buy wool but we also welcome donations.”
Michelle Millward from The Co-operative Funeralcare said, “These talented ladies have raised a brilliant amount of money for the charity. They deserve a big thank you for all their efforts.
“One lady in particular from Melksham, has made thousands of layette sets for babies that have passed away. They are really beautiful and she does it all for free.”
Rose added, “We always welcome new members of the group and if you would like to join, please speak to Michelle in The Co-operative Funeralcare.”
