A Holt-based writer has penned the memoir of former professional wrestler and America’s leading motivational schools’ speaker, Marc Mero.
In his debut book, Badd To Good: The Inspiring Story of a Wrestling Wildman, Ben Veal collaborated with Marc Mero to take readers on a journey from Mero’s tough upbringing in Buffalo, New York, to his achievements as a four-time New York State Golden Gloves boxing champion. The book also covers his entry into sports entertainment in the early 1990s as the charismatic character Johnny B. Badd, which led to him becoming a globally recognised star of the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE).
“Working with Marc on his autobiography was a huge professional privilege,” said Ben, a PR professional who runs Wiltshire-based Second Mountain Comms and hosts two award-winning podcasts, Good Journeys and Wrestling Life.
He added, “I knew within minutes of my first conversation with Marc that I had to write his story. I was immediately captivated by his personality, warmth and humility. He truly embodies what it means to be purpose-driven in life. Marc had reached the highest of professional heights but also faced the lowest of personal lows before turning his life around and focusing on helping others and empowering the next generation. Through Badd To Good, I hope readers will be inspired by his journey of redemption and resilience.”
Marc Mero made history in 1996 as the first-ever wrestler to receive a guaranteed contract from the WWE. He was a key figure during wrestling’s peak popularity, alongside his then-wife Rena ‘Sable.’
However, after a very public departure from the company and the breakdown of his marriage, Marc struggled through dark times before finding his purpose. In 2007, he founded Champion of Choices, a not-for-profit organisation that has empowered hundreds of thousands of young people worldwide to build self-confidence and make positive life choices.
“Through the publication of Badd To Good, Marc is able to positively impact an even wider audience,” says Ben.
With forewords by wrestling champions Diamond Dallas Page and Lex Luger, and contributions from industry luminaries including Mick Foley, Eric Bischoff, Vince Russo, Justin Roberts, and Erik Watts, Badd To Good is a no-holds-barred, real-life underdog story about overcoming life’s greatest obstacles and finding faith and purpose after dark times.
