A FREE water refill unit to encourage residents to use less single-use plastic, is to be installed in the Market Place.
Melksham Town Council has agreed with Wessex Water that the unit will be installed outside the Melksham News office and public toilets. Initially, Wessex Water had proposed the unit be installed outside the Town Hall, but councillors raised concerns about the visual impact on the historic building.
The new location for the unit has been described as “less visually intrusive”.
A report to councillors said, “It is still prominent enough to satisfy Wessex Water, as it is at the entranceway of the future community hub, public toilets and in-between the Town Hall and the Melksham Independent News.”
At a recent town council meeting, cllr Jon Hubbard said, “It’s a really good compromise position to put the unit.”
Town councillors resolved in September last year that the water refill unit should not be installed until it is “safe to do so” after the Covid-19 pandemic has passed or restrictions have been fully lifted.
