LOCAL independent traders and the town council are encouraging the community to shop local and support the town centre.
Traders have spoken up in support of the town following concern that recent traffic congestion caused by works at Melksham’s Farmers Roundabout on the A350, might be discouraging people from visiting the town.
Appealing to the community, Christine and Andy York, from Andy York Photography in the Littlebrook Courtyard, told Melksham News, “Please don’t be put off by the recent roadworks – the delays, if any, are usually minor. There is a variety of shops in the town that need your support.”
Owner of All Things Chic on Bank Street, Sam Sayers said, “If people come into the town they’ll find a lot more going on than they expect – people assume there is nothing here in Melksham, but they are wrong.”
Owner of I.D. Newman butchers in Church Street, Phil Gregson said, “Melksham residents should look local first when considering where to shop – the future of local shops and the town centre depends on support from the community. Shoppers will find some good quality products on offer here at Newmans, and in other independent shops around the town.”
Deputy mayor, cllr Hayley Illman, told Melksham News, “Melksham is a wonderful market town and we are all lucky to have such a wonderful array of independent businesses interlaced with larger chains to provide all we need! From baked goods to butchers, flowers to furniture, you quite literally can get all you want in town!
“If you’ve not been into Melksham town centre recently, make some time. You might just surprise yourself.
“As a former business owner myself, I know first hand what a difference regular faces make to local retailers. It means so much to be able to build positive relationships with customers, and allows for superior customer service throughout the town, and in people’s lives.
“Shopping locally is so important, not just to support the local people running these businesses and keeping Melksham commerce alive, but globally too. By making local choices, we are all helping to reduce our impact on the planet.”
In a effort to encourage more shoppers to the town centre, traders at the Littlebrook Courtyard are inviting musicians to perform.
Andy and Christine from Andy York Photography said, “Please contact us on 01225 707688 to find out more about performing in the courtyard.”
