The Melksham Makers’ Market will return this month on Saturday 27th June bringing together local makers and creatives.
What began with just 12 stalls now sees more than 20 local traders gather in the Market Place, bringing everything from handmade gifts and artwork to flowers, skincare, cakes, jewellery, coffee and treats for dogs.
The Melksham Makers’ Market was started by Nicola Coleman from The Secret Crocheter and Sarah Hillman from Florrie & Jean as a way of giving local makers and creatives somewhere affordable and welcoming to showcase what they do.
“When people visit the Melksham Makers’ Market each month, they see the lovely stalls, the coffee queues, the handmade gifts, the cakes and the friendly atmosphere around the Market Place,” explain Nicola and Sarah.
“What many people don’t realise is that behind it all are just two local Melksham girls trying to create something positive for other small businesses in the town. We’re not a big company or professional event organisers. We’re both small business owners ourselves, so we know how important it is to have opportunities to get your work seen and meet customers face to face.”
One thing Nicola and Sarah are especially proud of is that the market is completely focused on supporting local independent businesses from Melksham and the surrounding towns.
They said, “We really wanted to create something with a proper community feel. People shop local, traders support each other and lots of friendships have grown from the market over the years.”
The market is also run on a not-for-profit basis, with proceeds from stall fees going back into running the events, advertising, equipment and supporting the market itself. Each month, a small donation is also made to the Melksham Food Bank.
“We never imagined when we started that it would grow into what it is now,” they added. “It’s a lot of work behind the scenes but seeing the Market Place full of people supporting local businesses makes it all worthwhile.”
The next Melksham Makers’ Market takes place on Saturday 27th June from 9am until 2pm.
