THE Pear Tree in Whitley welcomed expert falconer Simon Alker and his impressive display of birds of prey from all over the world on Sunday 4th August.
General manager, Michelle Dhalaigh, and her team hosted the event where families were introduced to Simon’s family of birds, including Genghis, an American Kestrel (brought along by fellow falconer David Aldred from Predator Logistics), and Rosie and Max, two extraordinary Lanner Falcons usually spotted in Africa and whose wingspan measures and impressive 95-105cm.
Simon was keen to show off his two new baby Peregrine Falcons who, thanks to a fundraising competition to name them, won by Janet Richards, are now called ‘Topsy and Turvey’. Also named on the day was six-week old ‘Cotton Star’ a baby Bengal Owl, whose name was chosen by Charlie (aged 7) who chose Star and Kitty Whirledge (aged 8) who chose Cotton.
Other fundraising activities included photo opportunities ‘up, close and personal’ with the birds of prey and book-signing thanks to Marco Pierre White, with proceeds going to Help for Heroes.
Simon Alker is passionate about these beautiful birds. He said, “I’ve always had a fascination for these beautiful creatures and have been attending to birds of prey since I was 15 years old, 20 years ago. I think it stems from helping my dad, who raced budgies, when I was younger. I have fond memories of helping him to rear babies and tend to the avery.
“For many reasons some birds of prey are becoming endangered so we operate a breeding programme to try and keep the legacy of these beautiful creatures alive for future generations to enjoy.”
