IT’S not every day of the week that a concert takes place to celebrate a special event in your life but for five couples, Saturday 12th October will do just that.

Melksham Assembly Hall is the venue for a concert entitled ‘A Golden Evening’. This is part of the worldwide ‘Voices for Hospices’ programme raising money in this area for Dorothy House Hospice Care. Jim and Judy Speed who live in Melksham are celebrating their Golden Wedding this year. They have organised a number of concerts on behalf of Wiltshire Freemasonry and this will be their  sixth, with a total of £12,000 raised in the last nine years.

Bath music man Grenville Jones is a close friend of Jim and Judy and is helping to stage the concert in Melksham on 12th October. Grenville’s famous male choir from BBC’s ‘Last Choir Standing’, Bath Male Choir, and his talented mixed choir, The Bath Chorus, will be taking part. Guest soloist will be the brilliant young baritone Tom Corbishley. Tom hails from Trowbridge but is now studying music and drama in Essex. The violin and accordion duo Gitane will also be appearing. They have entertained audiences from across the world.

The five couples who are celebrating their Golden Weddings are Jim and Judy, Philip and Joyce Evry, Graham and Ivy Mattock, Graham and Jo Partt and Alex and Sheila Carruthers.

Jim Speed said, “We have had some fantastic concerts supporting ‘Voices for Hospices’ and we hope this will be the best yet. The theme of the evening will be music of the 60s and it will be a delight to share the celebration with four other couples.

“Grenville will introduce the evening in his innovative style and there will of course be the opportunity for all of the audience to sing!”

Doors open at 7.00pm. Tickets are £14 and can be obtained from Jim and Judy Speed – 102 Forest Road, Melksham, Wilts SN12 7AE – 01225 708121 or email jimandjudy speed@tiscali.co.uk They can be sent by post if a stamped addressed envelope is included or can be reserved and collected on the door when payment has been made. They can also be purchased through the Tourist Information Centre 32 Church Street, Melksham, SN12 6LS telephone 01225 707424.

  • Council calls on Government to rethink Melksham bypass decision

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Someone is killed or seriously injured on a notorious stretch of the A350 roughly once every 11 weeks, a senior councillor has said, as Wiltshire Council demands the Government rethink its decision to ditch funding for the Melksham bypass. During an emergency debate at full council on Tuesday 20th October, councillors overwhelmingly backed a motion condemning the decision and demanding continued investment in the key north-south route. They also called for the more than £500,000 the council has spent developing the scheme to be refunded.

The reserved matters application covers the scale, layout, appearance, landscaping and access for the proposed development on land south of the A365 Bath Road and west of Turnpike Garage. It follows outline planning permission being granted earlier this year for the warehouse and office development, which the company says will be a major investment in the town and create hundreds of jobs.
