MELKSHAM Cricket Club had a strong batting performance to thank, for what ended up being another convincing win.
After being put into bat by the home team, Melksham’s innings gained momentum when Joe Veacock joined opener Tom Wallis at the crease with the two putting on a partnership of 68 until Veacock fell for 44.
Wallis kept the scoreboard ticking whilst wickets fell at the other end until skipper Rich Hemmings came to the crease. Melksham then grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck as the two took advantage of a spread field and piled the runs on, with Hemmings finishing unbeaten on 37.
It was opener Wallis however who was the star of the innings as he was out in the 44th over for a brilliantly batted 81.
Biddestone’s reply got off to the worst possible start as Hemmings had an LBW shout given off the first ball of the innings. Melksham’s afternoon in the field went downhill from there however, as despite some excellent bowling particularly from Andy Footner who only conceded 8 runs from his 9 overs, sloppy fielding and some abysmal catching kept Biddestone in the game.
Charlie Waylen got the all important breakthrough with the score on 90 however, and with Tom Wallis continuing his fine day at the office with 4 wickets, Biddestone’s run chase was left in tatters. Russ Collins then mopped up the tail with 3 wickets for 6 runs. With 5 games now played, Melksham currently sit in second place in division 5.
