MELKSHAM & District Link are on the hunt for more volunteers to help keep the community scheme up and running for the next year.
Press & publicity officer, Jeanette Nash said, “Happy New Year and a big thank you from Melksham & District Link to all volunteers and clients and to the Melksham Independent News who kindly print these frequent calls for help.
“Thanks also to McCarthy & Stone who kindly donated £500 to Melksham Link. As Melksham & District Link is a registered charity, this generous donation is very much appreciated.
“Now that the Christmas festivities are over and we are starting a New Year and some people are making New Year resolutions [hopefully] and might want to do something for their community, we would just like to mention that we still need volunteers.
“We need both drivers and co-ordinators. Drivers, who are car owners are needed to take people to hospital and medical appointments. The people are mostly elderly, who would have difficulty with public transport and would be unable to keep their appointments without our help. The person being taken to their appointment gives a donation [envelope provided] which is sealed and handed to the driver who passes it on to the treasurer. The driver is paid a fuel allowance at the end of each month of 45p per mile which is the maximum allowed by the government.
“Co-ordinators are the organisers, the people who take phone requests for transport, arrange transport and drivers and tie everything together so that the whole procedure runs smoothly. Co-ordinators work from their own home using a mobile phone which is provided by Melksham Link. They usually do one week at a time and this is shared by as many people as possible, at the moment 4 or 5. But more would be good.
