A CARNIVAL-STYLE celebration of the Magna Carta’s 800th anniversary will be taking place this year, and people from Melksham are needed to help create costumes, banners, and flags, and to take part in the parade itself.
Do you have a talent for making costumes, banners and flags? Are you interested in history, music, dance or drama?
“This is an exciting opportunity for local people to get involved in a historic celebration,” said Abbi Gutierrez from Wiltshire Council. “On Monday 15th June there will be a large event to commemorate 800 years since the signing of the Magna Carta, a copy of which is held at Salisbury Cathedral.
“Wiltshire Council are looking for 15-20 people from the Melksham area to take part in the pageant parade (carnival-style) for the Magna Carta celebration event that will go from Salisbury Market Place to Salisbury Cathedral starting at 7.30pm. The event will end with fireworks at 10pm. Anyone interested is invited to find out more on Wednesday 1st April at 6pm in Melksham Town Hall.
“You do not need to be able to attend the event in Salisbury to get involved in this exciting initiative. There will opportunities for local groups make flags, banners, costumes etc as well as taking part in the parade itself. Young people are particularly encouraged to get involved
“There is also the possibility of organising a local event to show off the Melksham element of the pageant locally before the event in Salisbury.”
