A Melksham man has raised more than £600 for Parkinson’s UK by completing a 19.69-mile sponsored walk in tribute to his brother and others he knows living with the condition.
Richard Collett had originally planned to take part in the Great North Run for the fourth year, but was forced to give up his place because of knee pain, which had also prevented him from training. Instead, he organised his own challenge for Parkinson’s UK on the same day as the event.
He walked along the canal from his home in Melksham to his family’s former home in Oldfield Park, Bath, stopping at his brother’s home in Hilperton along the way.
Richard completed the 19.69-mile challenge in five hours and 46 minutes.
The walk has so far raised £662, with the final total expected to be around £740 once all pledges have been received.
Richard said, “I was disappointed that I had to step down from the Great North Run 2026 due to knee problems. I was still very determined to do something for Parkinson’s UK, especially knowing people that are suffering from this disease, including my own brother.
“My determination and overwhelming support and sponsorship got me there for this worthy cause.”
