THE family of local man Tony Skuse recently celebrated his achievement of reaching the milestone of donating a total 100 pints of blood to the National Health Service.
Over 25% of people in the UK will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lifetime and those who do, rely on donations from people like Tony.
His milestone means that Tony, 52, has donated on average three times per year since he started over 30 years ago.
Tony’s daughter Laurissa Sprules said, “As a family, we would like to say how proud we are of Tony on successfully donating a total of 100 pints of blood!
“Tony has been dedicated to donating blood since he started back in 1981, and has strived to achieve this milestone, whilst encouraging family to join in with this great cause. In the past, he even put off having his first tattoo as he knew it would cause a delay in his regular donation sessions!
“Tony didn’t even stop when his usual ‘donation arm’ became unusable due to the amount of scar tissue that built up – he just ensured they could continue to use his other arm!
“He believes his success is down to eating plenty of vegetables, to build up his iron during the week before his donation session, and then resting and enjoying a cup of tea and biscuit afterwards! So a big well done to you Tony on this brilliant achievement!”
