Melksham man is big pledge winner

MORE than 12,000 people took part in this year’s Big Pledge campaign, with one lucky participant getting a top sporty prize for their efforts.

This year’s Wiltshire Council Big Pledge challenge, called London Calling, celebrated the World Athletics Championships coming to London by encouraging people of all ages and abilities to take part in a series of challenges to help them to get active, get out and have fun. The aim of the challenge was to ‘collect’ all 30 countries taking part in this summer’s championships over the eight weeks by having a go at a variety of challenges including swimming, running, walking and cycling.

Everyone who achieved a ‘gold’ distance in their chosen activity was entered into a prize draw to win a Fitbit.  Phil McMullen, 59, from Melksham was chosen at random as the lucky winner. During the challenge Phil decided to use his car less and to walk more and so he quickly racked up the miles in the process.

Phil said, “As someone who’s both a dog owner and very involved in the community in Melksham, I tend to walk a fair amount anyway. It was interesting to enter the Big Pledge and keep a record of just how many steps were involved each day in trudging between meetings.

“What’s made a huge difference for us has been the fact that there’s now a decent train service through Melksham. We’ve gone from having three cars on the drive to just one, so consequently even the trip to collect this unexpected and very welcome prize has involved a few more steps in getting from home to the station and from Trowbridge station along to County Hall, than simply getting in the car and driving there as I would have once done.”

Chris Williams, Wiltshire Council portfolio holder for communities said, “As in previous years, our Big Pledge campaign has encouraged thousands of people to get more active and hopefully they’ve all seen a positive impact on their health and wellbeing.

“Although our campaign is now over for this year we hope that people still continue their efforts and as a council we’ll be here to support them with the numerous leisure activities and opportunities available in Wiltshire. I’d like thank everyone who took part and I hope they all get involved again next year when Big Pledge returns.”

The stats: • Big Pledge ran from 5 June to July 30 •  The total number of people who signed up was 12,156 • 43 schools participated • Area with the most individual signs up was Westbury with 887 • Area with the people that completed the furthest distance was Trowbridge with 78,067 km • 70% of participants reached Bronze Silver or Gold. This is a 38% increase on 2016 • 58% of participants reached ‘Gold’ level. This is a  9% increase on 2016.

  • Council calls on Government to rethink Melksham bypass decision

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Someone is killed or seriously injured on a notorious stretch of the A350 roughly once every 11 weeks, a senior councillor has said, as Wiltshire Council demands the Government rethink its decision to ditch funding for the Melksham bypass. During an emergency debate at full council on Tuesday 20th October, councillors overwhelmingly backed a motion condemning the decision and demanding continued investment in the key north-south route. They also called for the more than £500,000 the council has spent developing the scheme to be refunded.

  • Gompels submits detailed plans for new warehouse

Gompels has taken another step towards building its new warehouse in Melksham after submitting a detailed design of the scheme to Wiltshire Council. The reserved matters application covers the scale, layout, appearance, landscaping and access for the proposed development on land south of the A365 Bath Road and west of Turnpike Garage. It follows outline planning permission being granted earlier this year for the warehouse and office development, which the company says will be a major investment in the town and create hundreds of jobs.

The history of Melksham’s former RAF station is being brought to life in a new book exploring its role in training thousands of service personnel during the Second World War and beyond. Rob began researching the history while working with Melksham Remembers, a local history group. “It became clear that while thousands of airmen and airwomen trained and lived at RAF Melksham from its opening in 1940, its existence is rapidly fading from the community
