  • Residents urged to apply for permits ahead of school traffic trial

Residents and businesses located within the new School Streets pilot zone by Aloeric Primary School are being urged to apply for exemption permits before a new traffic restriction scheme begins in September.

The 18-month School Streets pilot, run by Wiltshire Council, will temporarily restrict through traffic outside the school at drop-off and pick-up times during term time from 4th September.

Enforced using automatic number plate recognition cameras, the scheme aims to reduce congestion and make roads safer outside school gates.

Exemption permits are available for residents living within the zone, local businesses and their employees, school staff, Blue Badge holders, and individuals with medical needs. School transport, such as school buses and licensed school taxis, will be arranged with the school, while emergency services vehicles are automatically exempt.

A night of karaoke will be held at Evie’s Kitchen in King George V Park in memory of Melksham man Phil Stone.

The event will run from 6pm to 10pm and will include a bar and food served by Evie’s Kitchen, including its popular Yorkshire pudding wraps, brisket, chicken, plant-based chicken, gluten-free roast potato bowls, children’s hot dogs and more.

  • Exciting new chapter for Gooding Accounts

Local accountancy firm Gooding Accounts has joined one of the UK’s fastest-growing accountancy and professional services groups, DJH.

It’s a move the company says will bring new opportunities for clients and staff while keeping its local Wiltshire roots firmly in place.

Founded in 2014 by Sam Gooding, the firm has built a strong reputation for supporting businesses across Wiltshire with a personal and proactive approach to accountancy.

Sam and Katy Gooding will continue to lead the team, and the business will carry on operating from its existing Wiltshire offices in Warminster, Melksham and Trowbridge. Clients will still be dealt with by the same team, offering the same outstanding service they have come to expect.

  • Elvis tribute show at Cons Club

Melksham Cons Club will welcome award-winning Elvis tribute performer Charlie Harper for a live show on Saturday 5th September.

Charlie, who has starred as Elvis Presley since 2020, will perform songs spanning the singer’s career, from 1950s rock and roll through to the 1968 Comeback Special and the famous white-jumpsuit era of the 1970s.

Dave Jenkins from the Cons Club said, “Charlie is one of the best Elvis tribute artists in the world and is currently touring the UK and Europe with his award-winning show.

“He has performed at venues including the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, has headlined Elvis festivals around the UK and has also appeared with Parkdean Resorts.”

  • Third failure over town’s life-saving equipment

A third failure involving life-saving equipment installed by Melksham Town Council has been identified after newly installed bleed kits were found not to have been registered on an emergency mapping system.

The kits were installed across several locations in Melksham in June but were not registered on the HeartSafe mapping system when Melksham News checked in August.

The system can be accessed by emergency service control rooms and allows ambulance call handlers to direct people to registered bleed kits in an emergency.

The latest issue is the third concern raised about life-saving equipment installed by the town council.

  • Melksham Times Past

A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis

A Butcher’s Business

THOMAS Hutton was a butcher and dealer, starting his business on King Street and then moving onto the High Street.

He and his wife Sarah (Chilton Bolwell) Hutton had 11 children. Sons Tom and John followed into the butchery business and worked in the High Street shop (pictured). Son George had been a cattle dealer, supplying meat to the shop.

When Thomas died in 1891, John took over the shop; Tom opened his own greengrocer business on Union Street.

In 1903, butcher James Newman retired from work and sold his Bank Street business to brothers John and George Hutton. In a message to the town, Newman tendered his sincere thanks to the inhabitants of Melksham and the district generally for the patronage he received during the many years he’d carried on the old established butcher’s business. He trusted that the same support would be extended to his successors. (James was a single man and did not have any children.)

  • Council urges residents to cut back overgrown vegetation

Melksham Town Council is asking residents to help keep the town’s footpaths and pavements clear by trimming back any trees, hedges or shrubs that overhang public paths.

The appeal comes after reports of vegetation obstructing public walkways in several areas of the town.

The council hopes that residents checking and maintaining vegetation around their properties will help prevent minor issues from becoming larger obstructions and ensure public routes remain accessible.

Cllr Saffi Rabey said, “We have recently received a number of reports from residents about trees, hedges and bushes overhanging pavements and public footpaths.
