MELKSHAM has a new online radio station after the launch of ‘Melksham Town Sound’.
The station which runs 24-hours a day is the brainchild of 16-year-old William Bridger. The Melksham Oak Community School pupil, who is currently awaiting his GCSE results, has turned a room at his parents’ home in Melksham into a studio.
The online radio station has allowed other local youngsters with a keen interest in radio to give presenting a try. Currently there are seven presenters who have a specific time slot, so listeners can listen in to their favourite presenters.
William said, “I have always been into radio and thought it would be great to have a station which is for Melksham, by local people.
“We are here for the local community but as we are a non-profit company and rely on volunteers, we could do with some more support.
“The equipment has all been bought by myself or my family and it is expensive to run. We currently mainly focus on the youth of the town, but we want to expand and appeal to a wider audience. We would love more presenters to get involved and target more listeners.
“Sadly we are not on FM yet due to funding, as that costs around £20,000, but one day we would like to get there. The online station works well as it can be accessed anywhere in the world and all that is needed is an internet connection.”
William and his Melksham Town Sound team are looking for a new studio to broadcast from. William said, “Currently it’s not ideal being at my parents’ home and we would love a local company to support us and provide us with some space in their business where we could broadcast from.
“We are a professional set-up with all the equipment and it would be great to be more in the town centre and play a bigger part in the community. We only really require desk space as the equipment fits on one desk! We get involved where we can in local events such as Party in the Park and would support any business that’s kind enough to house us.”
