Both the outgoing President, Terry Bazeley, and the incoming one, Steve Fivash, expressed their pride in Melksham Rotary Club who have had a remarkable year of fund-raising.
It is a fitting prelude to the celebration of their 50th Anniversary in 2015, having been chartered in 1965.
Under Terry’s leadership £11,000 was given to local organisations and £6,000 to international disaster related organisation, such as the Philippines.
The support given to the Art House Cafe by the local community is reflected in the club’s impressive financial support for so many worthy causes. The dynamic leadership provided by Rotarian Norman Drake led to the Prime Minister’s invitation to a gathering at 10 Downing Street for those who played a major part in voluntary service to their community. The club felt that Norman looked splendid on the steps of number 10!
Apart from the AHC, the club has also continued other forms of fund raising such as the Big Breakfast and the highly successful concert for Hope and Homes for Children in the Melksham United Church. There was also a most pleasing individual effort by 21 year old Rachel Brown who brought home a vibrant display of Ugandan art, raising over £400 in an AHC exhibition.
Our assistant governor recently visited the club and was full of praise for what he saw and heard, congratulating Terry on such excellent leadership and suggesting that the Melksham Club was the envy of all others in District 1200.
The handover of Presidents appropriately took place at the Peter Fisher Memorial Hall in Seend, a reminder of the loss of one of our most stalwart members. The club is in excellent spirits under President Terry and looks forward to another good year under President Steve.
He hopes he will be able to continue to raise money through the community of Melksham supporting the AHC, which we will have run for four years on the 4th July. Steve said, “We would welcome volunteers to help with the café. Why not pop in to see the art displays from local people, with a cup of coffee or tea and a slice of cake?”
