MELKSHAM Senior Forum is undertaking the Wiltshire Big Pledge which will be launched on 2nd April and last for 12 weeks .
Individuals, groups, businesses or communities are all being encouraged to pledge what they will do to make a difference to either their own health and wellbeing or for others in their local community.
Melksham Senior Forum will be accepting the pledge to do more to focus on improving the health and general wellbeing of seniors, and gearing their activities towards doing something as a community.
So far across Wiltshire, pledges received include becoming a dementia-friendly community, opening the local bowls club for free taster sessions and the invitation to take part in community walking and cycling holidays.
Brian Warwick from Melksham Seniors said, “So what will Melksham Seniors pledge? We are keen to support Melksham in Bloom by getting local people to participate and also persuading key retailers and banks to also dress their premises with attractive floral displays.
“We shall start by increasing the range of seniors’ activities prior to our monthly film show. For instance on 14th April at the Assembly Hall at 1.15pm we shall have a ‘sing-a-long’ prior to the film performed by the Sing n Smile Club. It is a great way of improving your lungs and reducing breathing problems Films on 19th May and 23rd June are also dates for your diary.
“We are looking for further activity suggestions, along with more volunteers to organise the range of activities already suggested. Suggestions to date include quiz sessions, tea dances, walking netball for oldies, walking football for over 50s, indoor skittles, movement to music, digital and photography idiot guide sessions and regular good speakers on interest- ing topics and activities.
“Our iPad sessions have proved to be very popular, we now need to expand our other projects, such as the Shed Club by finding those members a practical-sized workshop.
“Our morning meeting on the 9th April at the United Church in the High Street when Jane Scott OBE is our guest speaker will provide a great opportunity for you to have a strong say in what is needed in Melksham to improve the quality of life for older people.
“We also need to hear what activities you desire to support or even organise. We cannot expect others to always meet our needs however, by pledging now to get more actively involved in activities it will not only improve our health, but also the quality of life for ourselves and our neighbours. Therefore let’s accept the pledge challenge by looking after our own health and wellbeing by a more active living.”
