Melksham singer/songwriter releases debut album

LOCAL singer/songwriter Kim Seviour has released her debut album, ‘Recovery is Learning’ after signing to White Star Records.

Formerly the front woman of progressive rock band Touchstone, Kim Seviour has now launched her solo career which follows her signing to White Star Records.

Kim can now reveal that she has been working on a brand new album with one of prog music’s finest and prevalent musicians, John Mitchell (who also assists in the running of White Star Records together with Chris Hillman). Together Kim and John co-wrote and produced her forthcoming album ‘Recovery Is Learning’ which is set for a July 28th release.

On her collaboration with John Mitchell, Kim said, “It’s been a pleasure and an honour to be given the opportunity to complete this album with John and with White Star. It means so much to me for a number of reasons, so I really hope that everyone who hears it gets the joy from it that I have.”

John said, “Having discussed the idea of doing an album together for many years now, it was an absolute pleasure to finally bring the ‘Recovery Is Learning’ album to fruition and work with one of my oldest and dearest friends.

“Kim is a genuine talent, her voice is to my mind the greatest female voice we have on the prog scene at present and to get to co-write songs that both suit her vocal stylings and enable to her to realise her artistic vision was a real privilege. All hail Queen Seviour!”

Kim has a particularly unique approach to the feel of her musical creations, which encompass magically mesmerising soundscapes and lyrical content that represents her own personal journey to recovery.

After enduring various adversities whilst going through the writing process for the album, her ongoing struggle with M.E/CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) motivated her more than ever to inject her experiences and emotions into her music, which has cultivated in a stunningly unique album that is sure to cement her as an artist to watch.

Kim said, “I started off wanting to write about what I’d learned already from my own health experiences and the process of recovering from them. I became unexpectedly ill in other ways whilst writing which actually delayed it, so the second half of the writing process was all about climbing out of it for myself. Because of this, the album turned into a truly organic self-fulfilling prophecy.”

Kim would like to promote mental and physical well-being and as such, that is what her album inspiration is derivative of and what comes from her ongoing studies learning about psychology.

Kim is the most recent signing to White Star Records. Her former achievements to date are touring with Touchstone and playing with notable artists in the prog scene such as It Bites, Enochian Theory, and performing at festivals such as High Voltage and Ramblin Man Fair. Her work with Touchstone was what inspired Chris Hillman to sign Kim’s solo endeavour after she departed Touchstone.

Chris said, “I’d always felt that Kim had a great voice, personality and stage presence and so the idea of her writing and recording an album with John was very exciting. The combination of her voice and ideas combined with John’s skills as a musician and producer would surely create something special. I wasn’t disappointed. The first track ‘Chiasma’ I played over and over. I knew they’d created something special already and from then on, every track they completed maintained that quality. Melodic and powerful – a wonderful album.”

  • Eco fashion duo exchange ideas at top sustainable event

Two founders of a new sustainable fashion initiative have shared their concept at one of London’s leading eco fashion events.

Meagan Powell, from Melksham, and Gracie May, from Westbury, founded Swap Society earlier this year to work with independent venues to hold sustainable fashion events.

After a successful launch event at Doubles in Melksham, Meagan and Gracie were sent tickets to The Good Clothes Show in London. The event saw the biggest names in sustainable and vintage clothing come together at the Old Town Hall in Chelsea.

Gracie, who is manager of the Dorothy House charity shop in Westbury, said, “Everyone sang from the same hymn sheet as us and had the same morals and ethics as we do as a brand.

“We spoke with vendors who sold pre-loved items, while others had created their own garments from end-of-line fabrics or reused materials. We tried on sustainable wedding dresses, there was a room full of sustainably made hats – the whole experience was amazing.”

  • Young runners celebrate junior parkrun milestone

Three young runners have reached a significant milestone at Melksham’s junior parkrun, earning silver wristbands for completing 100 events.

Anna, aged 6, and Esme and Maggie, both aged 7, were recently awarded their silver wristbands in recognition of their dedication to the weekly 2km runs at King George V playing fields.

The Melksham junior parkrun takes place every Sunday morning at 9am and is open to children aged between four and 14. The free event involves running four laps of the park.

Participants are awarded coloured wristbands to celebrate their achievements: blue for 11 runs (half marathon), green for 21 runs (marathon), orange for 50 (ultra marathon), and silver for the 100-run milestone.

  • Holt Morris dancers entertain at local folk festival

A morris dancing group from Holt helped launch the Bank Holiday Monday celebrations at this year’s Chippenham Folk Festival, one of the country’s major folk events.

Bell’s Angels joined forces with Chippenham Morris Men to open the day’s programme of dance, performing in the middle of the High Street.

“Each side danced several alternate dances and ended with a joint session of Shepherds Hey,” said Bell’s Angels member Sue Mortimer. “Great fun was had by all and it was lovely to dance in front of such an appreciative crowd, which in Morris tradition brought out the sunshine!”

  • Residents move forward with plans to revive village pub

Residents in Semington are taking the next step in their plans to reopen the village’s pub for the community.

Seven residents have formed a team with the aim to potentially take on the Somerset Arms, which closed in 2023, and has been on sale since last November.

The idea would be for the residents to form a Community Benefit Society, a type of social enterprise that serves the needs of a community, and reinvent the pub.

“If we attempt this CBS approach, it is a big task and will need many more than the seven of us to make this happen. All sorts of skills are needed as well as financial support,” said one of the residents.

  • New rugby league teams launching in Melksham

Melksham Rugby Club is launching a new rugby league section this summer, with both men’s and women’s teams for those aged 17 and over.

The launch marks a significant expansion for the club, offering members and the local community a new opportunity to engage with the sport.

The men’s team, named the Melksham Tyremen, draws on the town’s history of tyre making with Cooper Avon Tyres, which closed in December 2023.

The team has already scheduled its first fixture, taking on the Somerset Vikings on Saturday 14th June, with kick-off at 2.30pm.

  • Upgrades needed to town’s railway services 40 years on

A local transport user group has said there is ‘room for improvement’ in services at Melksham’s railway station, which reopened 40 years ago.

The station now facilitates around 60,000 journeys a year. However, the chair of the Melksham Transport User Group, Graham Ellis, says the service is ‘appalling’ and could be improved — particularly as Melksham is the fourth largest town in Wiltshire.

Melksham Railway Station closed in 1966 as part of the Beeching cuts — a series of closures and reorganisations of the British railway network in the 1960s aimed at making the system more financially viable.

  • Melksham councillor pledges to champion young people in new cabinet role

Melksham councillor Jon Hubbard has taken on a key role in Wiltshire Council’s new cabinet, becoming Cabinet Member for Children’s Services.

His appointment makes him the only Independent councillor at the top table of the council’s leadership.

The new cabinet was formed after Liberal Democrat councillor Ian Thorn was narrowly elected leader on 20th May, following local elections on 1st May in which the party won the largest number of seats.

Cllr Hubbard, who has a long-standing background in supporting young people, said he is proud to take on the role.

“I am delighted to have been appointed as Cabinet Member for Children’s Services at Wiltshire Council and look forward to getting stuck into this vital role that sits at the heart of our community’s future."

  • Questions raised over £18,000 dog agility equipment and future of Dog Bark

Questions are being raised about the whereabouts of £18,000 worth of dog agility equipment purchased for Melksham’s Dog Bark – and what plans the town council has for the space.

The Dog Bark in King George V Playing Fields was temporarily closed in 2023 after residents raised safety concerns about the new equipment, which was said to be too high and slippery. A Melksham News investigation found the equipment did not meet the Kennel Club’s ‘fun agility’ guidelines, with one piece over a metre taller than recommended. The Kennel Club said it was “deeply concerned”, prompting councillors to shut the site and remove the structures.

The equipment consists of three hurdles, one hoop, a pipe tunnel, a dog walk, a ramp, a see-saw, and several square metal poles for dogs to zigzag around.
