FOUR Melksham teena-gers have created a project to help tackle mental health issues in young people.
The young volunteers, Beckie Leigh, Jack House, Megan Ramsay and Holly Newman are part of a government initiative called the National Citizen Service (NCS).
Holly said, “We have partnered with mental health charity, Young Minds, to eradicate the negative stigma associated with teenage mental health and help promote a culture where it is easier for young people to open up about their personal issues to one another.
“We have created ‘Project #BeTheLight to let those know who are suffering from depression that they are not alone. We want to abolish the negative stigma attached to mental illness, specifically teenage depression. We want everyone to know it’s OK to talk about depression.
“We have decided to raise awareness for depression by hosting a large night/light walk with various activities on the Bank Holiday Monday 31st August in Braydon Maize Maze, Braydon, Wiltshire. The idea is that those who participate will feel what it’s like to be alone in the world without a glimmer of light to turn to.”
