MELKSHAM will step back in time to the medieval era next year as the town celebrates the 800th anniversary of the town’s Market Charter.
A town crier competition, morris dancers, a medieval banquet and medieval re-enactments are just some of the events planned for the weekend of 28th and 29th September 2019.
The celebrations are to mark the historic moment in 1219 when Melksham was granted a Charter to hold a market every Friday and a fair on Michaelmas Day, a Christian festival to celebrate Saint Michael the Archangel.
The town crier competition, which will be organised by Melksham’s own town crier, Peter Dauncey and his wife Joan, will see up to 20 criers from across the country come to the town to yell out their ‘home cry’. Alongside the competition, morris dancers will entertain the crowds in the Market Place.
A medieval banquet will be held at the Assembly Hall, with staff in traditional costume serving over 20 dishes, whilst the hungry ‘peasants’ enjoy the entertainment provided.
In King George V playing field there will be medieval activities held in two arenas, with up to 30 people in costume.
The town council has announced plans to explore purchasing and installing eight new benches for the town, to formally commemorate each 100 years of the charter.
Melksham Town Council is looking for volunteers to join the committee to help organise and fundraise for the event. For more information visit the Town Hall or call on 01225 704187.
