MELKSHAM Town FC is closing in on an historic first ever Western League Premier League title.
Fans are set for an exciting end to the season with Town currently enjoying a huge 11 point lead over second placed Buckland Athletic, although the Devon-based side have three games in hand.
Town have 71 points with three games to play. Buckland are on 60 points but with six games to play.
This season is already guaranteed to be the best in Town’s history as they now cannot finish lower than second – their previous best came in the mid 1990s when they finished third.
But with league glory within their sights manager Darren Perrin is urging caution as he says there is still a lot of hard work to be done. He said, “This season has been absolutely remarkable and the players deserve all the credit. It is such a fantastic achievement to finish in the top two.
“The team couldn’t have a tougher three games to finish on if we tried, but the lads keep on producing the goods and I’m hoping they’ve got another three solid games to give.
“The team’s success is even sweeter when you consider that the club don’t pay any money in wages to players and are up against clubs who pay close to £1,000 per week. We also have only three players from outside Melksham.
“Whatever happens, this will be the highest Melksham Town have ever finished. I am immensely proud and honoured to work with these players, and the whole town should be proud of them too.”
Melksham end the season with three away fixtures starting this Saturday when they head to Gloucestershire to take on Slimbridge.
