MELKSHAM Town Football Club has offered neighbours, Westbury United FC, a lifeline to save them from the risk of being thrown out of the Southern League.
Westbury United were required to make all of their changing rooms larger, following their promotion to the Southern League at the end of the 2021/22 season, or risk possible expulsion.
The club thought they would be given more time to make the changes as it requires significant financial investment, but they have now been told by the Football Association and the Southern League that they can no longer host home games at their home ground, Platinum Hyundai Park, until the changes have been made. That’s when Melksham Town FC stepped in to save the day.
Town have offered to share their Oakfield Stadium with the team as they put the necessary building alterations in place. The first Westbury United game was played on Bank Holiday Monday, with further games planned on Saturday 2nd September, Saturday 9th September and Tuesday 26th September.
Chairman Darren Perrin said, “We are delighted that Melksham Town were able to help out our close county neighbours and friends in their time of need and it says a lot about what kind of community club we are.
“We will be hosting four games at the Oakfield Stadium and if Westbury requires further help and assistance with fixtures, our club is committed to helping them until they can move back to their own ground.
“Let’s show our solidarity and support for Westbury United during this transitional period. Together, we can make a difference!”
Westbury United said, “Having heard the seriousness of the matter, Melksham Town FC have come to Westbury United’s aid and have offered the club a lifeline to remain in the Southern League. We are extremely grateful to the Melksham board and especially to our friend and chairman at Melksham Town, Darren Perrin, who has gone above and beyond in the last 10 days to ensure Westbury United can continue its step 4 (Southern League) status.
“Darren reached out when he heard the news and acted very swiftly to offer us a helping hand, by very kindly offering us the Oakfield Stadium facility. We can’t thank Darren, the board and Melksham as a community enough for their generosity and support. We will forever be grateful to them for their kindness and approach in helping us through this difficult time.”
