A Melksham veteran who ran 150 miles in 11 days for the Royal British Legion said the community support was ‘incredible.’
Stephen Crawshaw-Bowen, who served in the Army for 12 years, started the challenge on 1st November and finished it on 11th November, Remembrance Day.
In total, he has raised over £700 for the charity, which is close to Stephen’s heart after he received support for himself and his family when he left the military, where he had served in the Yorkshire Regiment.
He said, “The challenge went really well tough at times, but incredibly rewarding. Thanks to everyone’s generosity and helping me raise awareness.”
During the run Stephen carried an RBL flag which depicts a lone soldier, a poppy, a Spitfire and a Royal Navy ship. Along with family responsibilities and a full-time job Stephen managed to run 20 miles on some days.
He said, “Those 20-mile days were definitely the toughest. Running that distance back-to-back takes a toll, both mentally and physically but carrying the flag kept me going. It reminded me exactly what I was running for, and it felt like a symbol of respect every time I set off. Even when the miles got hard, the flag kept me focused and grounded.
“Crossing that final mile on Remembrance Day was emotional it felt like everything came together at the right moment. It wasn’t just a finish line; it was a tribute to those who have served and those we remember. Finishing on that day made the entire effort feel even more significant.
“It was brilliant, my legs were definitely feeling the miles but being able to step onto the pitch with the other veterans after running so much made it even more special. The atmosphere was great, and it felt like the perfect way to round off the effort of the challenge. Painful on the legs but worth every second.
“The support this year has been incredible and the cause will always be close to my heart. After a bit of recovery, I’d definitely like to take on another challenge next year and keep raising awareness for our veterans. Maybe next year about taking on a weight carrying challenge tabbing with 20KG. But we shall see.”
