MELKSHAM’S War Memorial in Canon Square has been awarded Grade II listed building status.
After recommendation by Historic England, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has added the Melksham war memorial to the list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest, listing the memorial as Grade II.
In response to the news, Mayor of Melksham, cllr Adrienne Westbrook said, “I think that’s wonderful news. It is a beautiful place and it’s nice that it is becoming a listed building.”
Designed by Lawrence A. Turner FSA, the war memorial to the men of Melksham who fell in the First World War was unveiled and dedicated on the 23rd August 1919. The ceremony was attended by Field Marshall Lord Methuen and the Archdeacon of Wiltshire.
Following the Second World War, those who fell in that conflict were also commemorated.
