MELKSHAM woman, Mary-Ann Pickett, is taking part in a sponsored walk next month in memory of her sister.
Mary-Ann will take part in the ‘Walk of Life’ on Saturday 11th May, walking 26.2 miles from Bishop Cannings, near Devizes, along the Kennet and Avon canal to the finish line at the Holbourne Museum in Bath.
The event is to raise money for the Royal United Hospital in Bath and has been organised by the hospital’s charity, The Forever Friends Appeal.
Speaking to Melksham News, Mary-Ann said, “This year, the RUH Forever Friends Appeal is closer to my heart because I have lost a loved one. I entered the ‘Walk of Life’, and am walking in memory of my sister Christine who passed away a few weeks ago.
“All the money I raise will go towards the new Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (RNHRD) and Brownsword Therapies Centre, which is being built near the main entrance at RUH. This will provide some of the treatments currently offered at the ‘mineral hospital,’ in the centre of Bath, plus many more including pain management, cardiac rehabilitation, dementia clinics, hydrotherapy and dietetics.
“On a personal level, Christine would have benefited from the holistic and patient-centered approach to care, which will be at the heart of the new centre, and I know many Melksham residents who would too. Another interesting aspect of the therapies centre will be the help given to patients in finding resources and support in their own communities, enhancing daily life at home and reducing the trips to Bath.”
