Melksham young singer will reach for the stars at the O2

MELKSHAM teenager, Courtney Buchanan, has reached the national final of the new TeenStar competition by getting through the Southern England area final in Portsmouth.

The Southern Area Final took place on Saturday 18th May, after progressing through preliminary rounds in Fareham. The competition for places was very intense with only four of the 31 performers going through on the judges’ vote and a further one from an audience vote.

It was a nailbiting experience for Courtney and her supporters as she had performed seventh on the bill and the show was over two hours long with some stunning acts.

Courtney performed a cutdown version of ‘Jar Of Hearts’ to a simple guitar backing track. It was a beautifully emotional take and silenced the huge crowd with its honesty and simplicity. It clearly impressed the judges too and there was no prolonged agony when Courtney’s name was announced as the first winner.

Her mum, Sally said “I’m so proud of her. She’s fabulous but I still can’t believe we will be seeing her perform at the O2 Arena in London!”

Mel Austin of mobsta promotions, who organises the monthly Pilot music nights where Courtney regularly performs, and who played and recorded the backing track for her at his Beanacre studio said, “I had a good feeling about her chances after the first round when the chief judge commented she was one to watch and then she won a ten-session vocal coaching course after the second round in April.

“She is just a natural wonderful voice and her personality shines through every performance – real XFactor material.”

TeenStar is the latest national competition run by Future Music, following on the success of Open Mic UK and Live&Unsigned, which are for solo singers and bands, and which have kickstarted the careers of Jahmene Douglas, Lucy Spraggan, Hatty Keane and Birdy.

Courtney, who is in year  10 at Melksham Oak Community School is also preparing for a lead role in the autumn musical, lives on Bowerhill and is currently working with Mel on her debut album, which will be a mix of originals and covers.

She performed at the recent Colerne Music Fund charity fundraiser and received some support from the fund with travel costs for TeenStar. She can be seen as one of six acts on a DVD of that show now on sale and she will be playing the main stage during the afternoon of Saturday 13th July at this year’s Melksham Party In The Park.

If you would like to buy a ticket for the TeenStar Final at the O2 Arena on Sunday 7th July, or if you feel able to offer some sponsorship to help with travel/ticket costs, please email melaustin100@gmail.com or sally.2004@btinternet.com.

  • Plenty of positives for Melksham Town despite Yeovil defeat

Melksham Town were beaten 4-1 by National League side Yeovil Town in a well-attended pre-season friendly at the Meads of Melksham Community Football Stadium on Saturday.

Played in extremely hot conditions, the fixture drew a large crowd and provided Town supporters with an early look at the club’s new signings ahead of the upcoming season.

Despite the scoreline, manager Kieran Baggs took plenty of positives from the performance.

“The stadium was packed and it was nice to play in front of a big crowd again,” he said. “I thought we played some really good stuff at times and scored a fantastic goal but in the end the National League side showed their class.

“We can’t look into it too much because we didn’t see that much of the ball for long periods but, for me, I thought the reason why we kept it competitive for so long was our fitness levels.

  • Melksham Times Past

A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis

Do you know your Melksham trivia?

For Art’s Sake

John Joseph Haze- land (1838-1889) was a brewer’s son who chose not to go into the family business at Shaw Brewery after his father died in 1848, but instead found himself travelling to Norway in 1857, where he later settled and worked as a language teacher. Hazeland died in 1889 in Kristiania, Norway and his funeral viewing was immortalised in a painting by a famous artist also from Kristiania (now Oslo). Do you know the name of this Norwegian artist and what painting he is famously noted for? (Have a good think, take yourself to King George playing field and enjoy an ice cream from Edy’s.)

  • New central depot plans revealed for Christie Miller site

Plans for a new depot on the former Christie Miler site are set to go on public display, with residents invited to comment before a planning application is submitted later this summer.

The proposed Wiltshire Council central depot would be built on the former sports centre and golf course site at Bowerhill, bringing together a range of services, including highways, waste, streetscene, a Household Recycling Centre, maintenance workshops, offices and parking. The council says the fit-for-purpose facility would support council services for the next 30 years and improve efficiency by reducing the number of depot sites across the county.

The proposals will be on display at Melksham Community Campus from Monday 13th July to Friday 31st July. Display boards will show the proposed site layout, including enhanced Household Recycling Centre (HRC) facilities. Council officers and members of the project team will be available to answer questions on Tuesday 21st July from 10am to 4pm and Thursday 23rd July from 2pm to 7pm.

  • Schoolchildren enjoy theatre trip as part of development programme

Pupils from Bowerhill Primary School visited the Bristol Hippodrome to watch Matilda the Musical as part of the school’s personal development programme.

A total of 170 pupils from Years 4, 5 and 6 attended the theatre trip as part of the school’s ‘7 in 7 for Personal Development’ initiative, which aims to give every child the opportunity to experience live theatre three times before leaving primary school.

Headteacher Chris Light said, “Visiting the theatre is a big part of our ‘7 in 7 for Personal Development’ and we want all of our children to experience the magic of the theatre three times before they leave primary school.
