  • Residents criticise town council over tree works during nesting season

Residents have hit out at Melksham Town Council after coppicing works were carried out on a mature horse chestnut tree in King George V Park during what is considered to be nesting season.

The tree, which was not under a Tree Protection Order, was recently cut back by the town council. The works took place shortly before a circus arrived to set up in the park and speculation among residents has pointed to the tree being cut back to allow a large vehicle from the circus to pass through.

The council has said the tree was “identified as needing maintenance during a comprehensive tree survey conducted in January,” but the timing and apparent link to the circus have sparked criticism from local residents.

  • Public meeting to view Shurnhold Fields car park plans

Plans for a new car park at Shurnhold Fields will be on display at a public meeting at Melksham Town Hall on Monday 12th May.

The event will give residents the chance to view the proposals, speak with Wiltshire Council representatives, and submit any questions or comments. Plans for new flood defences in the area will also be available to view.

Shurnhold Fields, located off Dunch Lane, is jointly owned by Melksham Town Council and Melksham Without Parish Council and is maintained by the Friends of Shurnhold Fields. A car park has been part of the councils’ long-term vision to improve access to the popular green space.

  • Melksham woman reunited with sign from her grandfather’s iconic town centre shop

A Melksham woman has been reunited with a sign from her grandfather’s iconic Melksham shop, based in the town centre in the 1950s and 60s.

Marianne Staniforth has been given the sign for Sawyers, which was her grandfather’s fruit, vegetable and sweet shop located in the precinct in the town centre. The shop, which is now Haine & Smith Opticians, stood next to the former picture house.

“Lots of people will remember the shop,” says Marianne. “It was quite iconic in Melksham and I am sure many residents have lovely memories.”

When a family friend bought Marianne’s late father’s house, they found the sign being used as a shelf in the pantry.

  • Local doctor completes ‘Peaks in Pants’ challenge to support women in need

A doctor from Spa Medical Centre has completed the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge, raising over £11,000 and collecting hundreds of pairs of underwear for women in need.

Dr Claire Rigby joined seven other women for the ‘Peaks in Pants’ challenge, climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) – in under 24 hours, to support the charity Let’s Get Our Knickers in a Twist.

The charity, launched in 2022, provides new underwear to vulnerable women, including those who are homeless, fleeing domestic violence or living as refugees. “You can’t donate second-hand underwear,” explained Claire. “So this charity helps women who often only have what they’re wearing.”

Speaking after the challenge, Claire said, “I am aching all over but I am on cloud nine. It felt great in the end and we’ve raised over £11,000 for Let’s Get Our Knickers in a Twist – and we have a mountain of pants!”
