MELKSHAM’S community is pulling together to help Core Church, which is putting on a free Christmas Day feast for residents.
Following the success of last year’s event, Core Church is again offering a free festive feast on Christmas Day at Melksham Assembly Hall, to which everybody is invited.
This marks the seventh year that Core Church has provided the meal, which is supported by local people, organisations and businesses from across Melksham. ID Newman and Sons in Church Street, has offered to provide free turkey breast for the event.
Gavin Owen from Core Church said, “It is great to have this level of support, even in a time of recession. It is brilliant that local businesses are spreading some festive cheer. The meal really is for everyone, and we can even deliver dinner to people who are housebound.
“I recently spoke to someone who told me that they had planned to come to the Christmas dinner last year, but when it came to it their worries about going somewhere new and not knowing anyone got the better of them. I explained that other people had told me they felt the same way before they came for the first time, but now they wonder what they were worrying about because they met people they already knew and made new friends and have been every year since, so it is a welcoming place for everyone.
“Also, some people aren’t keen on phoning someone they don’t know – if that’s you then instead of ringing you could pop into Newman’s butchers, the Town Hall or the Assembly Hall and let them have your name and contact details and they will pass them on to me so I can put you on our guest list. Although we always cater for extra guests, so even if you decide on Christmas Day that you want to join us, please just come down to the Assembly Hall or give us a call if you need transport.
“I’ve been asked if you have to be above a certain age to attend, if you have to be on benefits or if you have to be on your own. The answer to all of those questions is no. The event is for everyone, all are welcome – young and old, rich and poor, on your own or with family and friends.
“A huge thank you to the staff at the Assembly Hall, who each year help us set up the event. If businesses or individuals would like to donate food for the feast, then please do get in touch.”
Doors will open at 11.00am for carols and refreshments, followed by a traditional Christmas dinner (with vegetarian option) at 1.00pm. Guests are welcome to come for all or part of the day free of charge (although donations are welcome).
If you or anyone you know would like to join Core Church on Christmas Day you can book your place by calling or texting Gavin on 07788 446567.
