Dozens of men came together in Melksham for Step Forward, a 5km walk and evening of open conversation about wellbeing, connection and support.
Participants gathered in Melksham Market Place on Wednesday 23rd September before setting off on the walk through the town, chatting and making new connections along the way.
The group walked to King George V Park, where they gathered at the Sham Jam marquee for food from Evie’s Kitchen before an informal discussion hosted by Duff Eynon.
Guest speakers Ryan Hartley, creator of Always Better Than Yesterday, and Andy MacKenzie, founder of Dare2 Become, shared their experiences and perspectives before inviting those attending to join the conversation.
Several men then spoke about their own experiences, with others listening and offering their support.
The evening also provided an opportunity to socialise, with conversations and laughter alongside the more serious discussions.
Step Forward was part of the Sham Jam Festival, a 10-day arts festival organised by Melksham Town Council. The event was held in support of Man Down, one of Melksham Mayor Saffi Rabey’s chosen charities.
Cllr Rabey welcomed those taking part at the start of the evening.
She said, “Step Forward was a really important event for me, both as Mayor and in support of Man Down, one of my chosen charities. Men’s mental health is something I care deeply about, and creating opportunities for men to come together, connect and support one another can make a real difference.
“I was delighted to welcome everyone at the start of the evening and see so many people taking part. Sometimes all it takes is a walk, a chat and a chance to meet others to help people feel less alone.
“My thanks go to everyone who made the event happen, especially Duff Eynon, our guest speakers Ryan Hartley and Andy MacKenzie, Evie’s Kitchen for the food, and everyone who took part. I hope the event encourages more conversations, more connections and reminds people that nobody has to face life’s challenges alone.”
