Midnight walk fundraiser challenge for Melksham woman

A MELKSHAM woman is looking for sponsorship as she prepares to take part in the Bath Midnight Walk. 

Francesca Morris is raising money for Dorothy House following the support they gave a family member. The walk takes place on Saturday 13th September and involves an 8km walk through Bath.

Francesca said, “I have chosen to do this event due to the care Dorothy House provided to a family member during their last few days and the support they gave the family during and after. I am asking people to sponsor me in order to help to this great cause as they may also need them one day. They can sponsor me by texting FAMM89 and the amount they wish to sponsor to 70070.   • A fresh start for Melksham Oak with new senior leadership team. The new senior leadership team at Melksham Oak Community School say they are looking forward to helping the school flourish and encouraging students to have high aspirations. The town’s only secondary school was in the public eye last year following parents’ complaints and teacher strikes; however, the new team is now looking forward to a fresh start. New executive headteacher David Cooper has taken over the leadership of the school from former headteacher Haris Hussain.   • Police call for witness after elderly man mugged outside Sainsbury’s. Wiltshire Police are calling for witnesses or anyone who has information to come forward after an elderly man was mugged outside of Sainsbury’s at the end of last month. The man, who is in his 80s, said he was approached by a woman at around 2.30pm on Saturday 28th September, claiming to be collecting money for charity. A statement from Wiltshire Police said, “He gave her some cash and she grabbed him into a hug. “After entering the store and when trying to pay for his shopping he realised that around £60 was missing. “The woman is described as a white woman, around 5ft 6ins tall of a slim build.   • Local mum’s CPR campaign gains national attention. A Melksham mum has taken her campaign for CPR awareness to the national stage, urging all new parents to learn this critical skill after her own experience saving her baby’s life. Over the past few years, Hayley Gardyj, a mother of three from Bowerhill, has been campaigning to ensure that all new parents are given CPR training, following her traumatic experience of giving CPR to her son Brodie when he stopped breathing as a newborn. Recently, Hayley featured in an infant CPR training video produced by the British Red Cross and appeared on Channel 5 News, sharing her powerful story and the importance of CPR training. “I feel that the message is reaching more people and being spread far and wide,” Hayley said. “More people are joining the campaign and sharing the CPR video, including health visitors, midwives, and paediatricians who I work with at HCRG Care Group. Melksham Town Council has agreed to enter negotiations with Wiltshire Council to acquire the former Blue Pool site, which may also incorporate the Assembly Hall in its redevelopment.   • Mother raises awareness of organ donation after daughter’s life-saving heart transplant. A MOTHER from Melksham has shared her teenage daughter’s extraordinary journey of receiving a heart transplant to encourage more people to consider organ donation. In a show of support, last month the Town Hall was lit up in pink as part of the national campaign to raise awareness. Carlie Robson’s 15-year-old daughter, Ciara Cottle, was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy earlier this year, a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and struggles to pump blood effectively.   • Local pensioner to sell guitar collection to fund energy bills this winter. A local man says he feels compelled to sell his cherished guitars to cover his energy bills this winter, following the government’s decision to stop the £300 winter fuel payment for millions of pensioners. David Walker, known locally for his involvement in community groups and as the town’s former Carers’ Champion, has described the situation as ‘dismaying’ and ‘disillusioning.’ “It’s disillusioning that I’m having to sell things that mean so much to me, but I have nothing else,” said David.   • Community rallies to support new pizza and music cafe after devastating fire. The community has rallied together to raise funds for a newly opened space offering coffee and pizza alongside vinyl records, which has suffered a devastating fire. Doubles, located at Avonside, had only been open for five weeks before the fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday 14th September.   • Melksham scheme wins BBC ‘Make a Difference’ award. A Melksham-based initiative that recycles and reuses technology has won a BBC Radio Wiltshire Make a Difference Award for its efforts to tackle the UK’s growing e-waste problem. Wiltshire Digital Drive, a community interest company, took home The Green Award at this year’s ceremony for its significant push to reduce technology waste and provide refurbished laptops to families in need.
