LOCAL MP Michelle Donelan has spoken in the House of Commons in favour of a bill to cap energy prices, highlighting that the current system is unfair and broken as it punishes people who are loyal customers and can often discourage switching.
She said, “People in my constituency of Chippenham are overpaying for energy by nearly £8million which is nearly £300 a year for over 27,000 families.
“Nearly every household in the country depends on gas or electricity or both, and are essential services on which we all rely. On average each household spends around £1,250 a year on energy at home, making it one of our biggest household bills, and for the poorest 10% of households, energy is more than 10% of their annual household expenditure.
“I hope we can swiftly progress with this bill so that we can put right an intolerable situation in which consumers have been exposed to paying £1.4billion more than they would in a properly competitive market.”
