A MELKSHAM mum will jump 10,000ft from a plane later this month to raise money for local fundraising campaign, ‘Keep Mya Moving’.
Linda Hancock will be taking to the skies on May 6th to skydive for five year-old Mya Macey-Plested who needs a special wheelchair.
Mya was born at 28 weeks with a spinal cord injury, leaving her an incomplete tetraplegic which affects her arms and legs. She is unable to walk and uses a wheelchair; however she is rapidly outgrowing her current wheelchair and will soon need a replacement. Linda, whose son is in Mya’s class at school, felt compelled to help raise the £7,000 needed to buy Mya a new wheelchair.
“I had already booked the skydive as I wanted to raise money for a worthy cause, but I hadn’t yet decided which one,” explained Linda. “When Mya’s mum told me that she needed a special wheelchair light enough for her to manoeuvre herself, allowing her to interact with her friends as she does now, enough was said and I decided to jump for Mya.
“Mya is an incredible little girl – smart, funny, and makes friends easily. Mya needs a wheelchair light enough for her to traverse independently, allowing her to interact with her friends as she does now.
“I’ve seen first hand how important it is that Mya can move her wheelchair by herself, allowing her to move within her classroom, during playtime, trips to the park with her friends, the list is endless and one which most of us, thankfully, need not think about.
“I’m petrified – that’s the only way I can describe it! I’m terrified at the thought of jumping, but hope I could raise just a little, for such a good cause.
“I don’t have a particular figure in mind that I would like to raise, but if I could hit £100 I’d be chuffed – because something is better than nothing, right?
“There is no pressure and no expectation. If you can and you would like to, please spare a little if you can.”
