MELKSHAM’S first 24-hour gym is set to open its doors on Saturday 26th February.
Aztec Fitness Rooms, located in the former Peacocks building on Bank Street, will have a fully equipped gym, a large studio room for fitness classes and external hire, shower and changing facilities and two hours parking directly behind the building, that is all accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to all its members. In addition, there will also be a smoothie and milkshake bar, that is available to both members and non-members.
Business owners David Pearce and Chris Shuttleworth said, “The equipment we have purchased for the gym is high-end and custom-made, every detail along the way has been thought about and designed to the highest standard.
“We want people to enter our gym and think “wow”, which is something we believe we have achieved. As with any project this big, many people have been involved to see it through to completion, however we would like to give a special thanks to Sophie, Kelly, Josh, Wayne and Cam for everything you have done.”
Aztec Fitness Rooms first announced their plan to open a gym in Melksham town centre in the spring of 2021, however structural issues with the old Peacocks building caused significant delays.
“It’s been a difficult, but still exciting year,” said David and Chris. “Once we were given access to the building and began the process of turning an old clothing shop into a modern fitness facility, we ran into multiple issues that were not quick to rectify.
“The main issue, as many people who have followed our journey on social media will know, was the roof of the building. The roof itself was in need of repair, however we soon realised that patching it up would only be a temporary fix.
“We were given the option, either patch it up and look at closing the gym a couple of years down the line to replace the roof, or replace it now and delay the initial opening date.
“From the start we have wanted this project done right and to avoid disruption later down the line, we took the option to replace the roof entirely. Originally we were advised that the replacement of the roof would delay things by a few months, however in 2021 the UK was hit by a building materials crisis due to the ongoing pandemic.
“Although this was a huge blow, we continued to push forward and engage the community in additional ways. We had fantastic support from Melksham Town FC who allowed us to use one of their pitches for outdoor fitness classes throughout the summer. This gave us a chance to meet our future members and give them a taste of the classes that would be on offer.
“Now we are this close to opening, the last year seems surreal, however the support from those in the community who have followed our journey has been fantastic.”
The gym will be open to the public from 10am on Saturday 26th February allowing people to see the facilities, meet the staff and sign up.
