PLANS have been announced to build a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility on the site of the old Countrywide store at the Farmers Roundabout.
The site has been purchased by AB Dynamics, a rapidly growing engineering business supplying the global automotive industry. Based in Bradford on Avon, the company has a reputation as one of the world’s most trusted suppliers of automotive test systems used by major automotive manufacturers for research and development of advanced vehicle technology.
The company plans to demolish the existing building, which has been empty since the Countrywide store closed in May last year after Countrywide Farmers plc went into administration.
A new ‘high quality’ manufacturing facility will be built in its place, which insiders say could create new jobs for the town.
Chief technology officer at AB Dynamics, Mat Hubbard, told Melksham News, “We have purchased the site and are planning to erect a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.
“Initially, jobs will be transferred from our other existing sites – but it is expected that new jobs will be created in the future.
“We currently have our main headquarters in Bradford on Avon, and we are developing another site in Bradford on Avon as our new design centre. We intend to consolidate all our manufacturing activities at the new site in Melksham.
“Plans are in the early stages, and we have met with Melksham Town Council to discuss our vision for the site. We are aiming for completion of the new facility in early 2021.”
Mayor of Melksham, cllr Jon Hubbard (who is no relation to Mat), said, “ I am absolutely delighted about these plans for the Countrywide site, which will hopefully see new jobs for the town and a positive impact on the town centre, with increased footfall.
“Also, I am pleased that the town council will be meeting with AB Dynamics to explore how work on the site can be best done in sympathy with the needs of the community and the town.”
