A new group for people to walk, connect and find support has launched in Melksham.
Walk ‘N’ Talk Wednesdays is a weekly meet-up aimed at fostering community, social interaction and offering support for those facing life’s challenges.
The group meets at Doubles on Avonside at 6pm. There is an option for refreshments before the walk, which lasts around one hour.
The initiative has been introduced in Melksham by Wiltshire-based welfare charity Best Mates. The charity connects people with a ‘mate’, someone to talk to who may have had a similar experience, and has a network of volunteer service providers offering a range of support.
“Our aim is to support people through life’s troubles and to literally be your ‘best mate’ whenever you need one,” said co-founder Jeff.
“The first walk in Melksham was a really good turnout. These walks are about more than just stretching your legs. They are about community, support and guidance. A safe space to step away from the noise, get some fresh air and connect with others who simply understand.
“Whether you come to talk, listen or just walk, you’ll find friendship, encouragement and people who genuinely care.”
The Melksham walks will be facilitated by two local women, Nicky Dear and Sherelyn Cowles. Walks are open to adults aged 18 and over and no booking is necessary. “Wear comfortable shoes for walking and bring a torch,” said Nicky.
The initiative started at Coate Water in Swindon 18 months ago and now attracts around 30 people each week.
“We wanted to roll it out to other towns because of how popular it has been,” said Jeff. “We have had people attend who have lost their husbands and have made new friends, meeting up outside the walks every week. We have also had people attend who just want a chat. Sometimes, the best way forward starts with a simple walk and a conversation.”
Best Mates is a welfare charity made up of everyday people who have experienced their own struggles in life and can offer a helping hand to those in need.
