Hundreds of trees have been planted in Melksham in the first phase of a new community woodland.
Volunteers from the Melksham Green Space group along with local residents planted over 400 young native saplings along Clackers Brook on Sunday 30th November, marking the start of an ambitious plan to turn the land into a thriving woodland and nature trail for local people and wildlife.
Nigel Benham, Chair of Melksham Green Space, said, “Over 400 trees and shrubs were planted including English oak, willow, birch, wild cherry, field maple, hazel and hawthorn.
“We intend to watch over these trees over the next few years until established and to add more in the years ahead with the aim of creating a green corridor through Clackers Brook. This will enhance the wildlife habitat, provide a beautiful tree lined area for residents to enjoy and hopefully help mitigate flooding, which is becoming an increasing problem in this day and age.
“We want this to be something the whole community can be proud of. By planting these trees together, we’re not only creating a woodland for people to enjoy but helping to protect and restore local nature for future generations.
“I would like to thank all the Melksham Green Space volunteers and local residents who turned up on the day to help.”
