Parents and carers urged not to put off seeking medical help amid anxieties about coronavirus

PARENTS, carers and others looking after children across Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire are being advised not to let worries about coronavirus delay them from seeking medical help this Easter.

Health leaders are offering reassurance that while services remain extremely busy, parents should not think twice about using urgent and emergency healthcare services when their child becomes ill or has a serious accident.

The advice is also extended to adults – particularly those who are elderly – who may be in need of urgent medical attention.

Gill May, Director of Nursing and Quality, Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “The current advice to stay at home is massively important and something we all need to be following, but we want to be clear that no parent should put off seeking help for their little one if they need urgent care.

“Although we are all spending more time indoors, accidents still happen and children still become ill – just as they did before the coronavirus outbreak.

“Children usually bounce back from minor illness and minor injuries quickly, but for those times when it could be something more serious, please act quickly – as you usually would – to avoid the situation worsening.”

The Great Western Hospital in Swindon, the Royal United Hospital in Bath and Salisbury District Hospital each have a round-the-clock Emergency Department, all of which remain open as usual for the most serious health concerns, such as broken bones, heavy bleeding and loss of consciousness.

This will not change over the Easter weekend and, in addition, GP surgeries will also be open according to their usual working hours.

During the lockdown, Bath mum Rosie Attwater took her three-year-old daughter to the Emergency Department at the RUH after a nasty fall onto the family’s living room coffee table resulted in a potentially serious head wound.

The family were triaged on arrival and seen by a paediatric nurse who was able to glue the wound and stem the bleeding.

After only an hour at the hospital, Rosie was able to take her daughter home, where she quickly returned to being a happy, healthy and playful pre-schooler.

Dr Nick West, Consultant Paediatrician at the Great Western Hospital, said: “Situations such as these show just how important it is to seek help quickly.

“A serious bump or cut to the head is always a cause for concern and, in this case, there was also significant bleeding.

“Going to hospital immediately was the right thing to do as it meant the family received swift medical attention and a more serious outcome was averted.

“It’s also really important that families seek advice if their child has a fever and they appear very unwell.

“We would want to see any baby under three months with a fever more than 38 degrees, regardless of the underlying cause.”

People with concerns about the health of a baby, child or adult, should use the NHS 111 service, either online or by telephone.

Additionally, parents and carers in Bath and North East Somerset and Wiltshire can seek help through the free, downloadable HANDi App, which provides expert advice on how to manage common childhood illnesses direct to smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices.

The NHS-endorsed Healthier Together website is also a useful child health advice tool and can be accessed by visiting www.what0-18.nhs.uk.

  • Melksham Toy Appeal: give a little joy this Christmas – and help the planet too

Local residents are being invited to help spread festive cheer and support a greener Christmas by donating new or good-condition toys for children across Melksham.

The Melksham Toy Appeal is now open for donations until 30th November, with drop-off points at Giffords Surgery and Melksham Town Hall.

Organisers are encouraging families to take the opportunity to reuse and recycle by passing on toys in excellent condition that are no longer played with. By donating pre-loved toys, residents can switch toys and reduce waste at a time of year when waste often increases.

Then, on Saturday 6th December, during the Melksham Christmas Lights Switch-On, Friends of Giffords Surgery will be hosting a festive fun event in the Council Chamber at Melksham Town Hall from 2pm to 6pm. Everyone will be welcome to come and take some toys for Christmas.

  • Car park work begins at Shurnhold Fields

Work to install flood prevention measures and a car park at Shurnhold Fields has begun.

Wiltshire Council’s contractor, MGroup, is carrying out the works at Shurnhold Fields, a popular green space off Dunch Lane.

The work, which started on 17th November, is expected to take five weeks.

The project includes flood prevention measures for Dunch Lane residents, funded by a £90,000 grant from the Environment Agency.

The work to create a car park is being carried out on behalf of Melksham Without Parish Council and Melksham Town Council, which jointly own the site and will each contribute £12,500 towards the project.

An award-winning drama society in Holt is set to perform its next production at the end of this month, titled The Kitchen Sink.

Holt Players will be performing the comedy show from Thursday 27th to Saturday 29th November at Holt Village Hall.

“It is a bittersweet and poignant comedy about small changes and big dreams in an ordinary, or rather unusual, family in Yorkshire,” said Fiona Campbell, a member of Holt Players.

“It will have you roaring with laughter one minute and reaching for your hanky the next.”

  • Melksham wildlife artist features on BBC Countryfile

A wildlife artist from Melksham recently featured on BBC Countryfile, making paints out of clay at a local woodland.

Naomi Joy Fox appeared on the show on Sunday 2nd November at Green Lane Woodland near Trowbridge, making paints from clay she had dug out of the soil, using them to finish a painting of bats.

“It was a really amazing experience,” said Naomi. “It was just me and a small crew in a woodland; it was very beautiful and very casual and calm, which was really lovely.”

Naomi has been working on a project with Arts Council England, exploring wildlife at local Wiltshire Wildlife Trust sites and using pigments dug from the soil to create her art.

  • Local boxer to compete for Commonwealth title

A local boxer is preparing to fight for the Commonwealth bantamweight title in London this month.

Megan Redstall, who trains at The Contender Gym in Melksham, is set to face Laura Pain at York Hall on Sunday 30th November.

“I’m excited and nervous,” said Megan. “Any boxer who says they’re not nervous is lying. It’s going to be very exciting; it’s got lots of people talking, which is good.

“She’s going to be my toughest opponent yet. We’re both unbeaten, and we’re both trying to win.”

“Hopefully this is the fight that can be that break for me,” she said.

The fight comes after Megan was due to contend for the Super Flyweight Commonwealth title last year, but her opponent’s illness meant the fight was cancelled.

  • Melksham schools raise funds for Children in Need

Schools across Melksham marked this year’s Children in Need by holding a variety of fundraising activities.

Pupils at Aloeric Primary School took part in a sponsored spell-a-thon and a goal-a-thon, and created Pudsey artwork for the school.

Bowerhill Primary School pupils came to school dressed as their favourite fairytale characters. Deputy head Rachel Amor said, “This idea was chosen by our school council children. A great day was had by all staff and children alike.”

Children at The Manor Primary School filled a giant Pudsey template with coins, which were then donated to the charity. They were also invited to go to school in a Pudsey-themed non-school uniform.

Children at Forest and Sandridge Primary School also took part in a non-school uniform day to raise funds for the annual event.

  • Campus staff praised for saving man’s life

Staff at Melksham Community Campus have been praised for saving a man’s life after he collapsed at the centre.

The man was in the centre’s sports hall playing pickleball in September when he collapsed, with other players quickly alerting staff to the emergency.

Duty manager Abi Dempsey was first on the scene, supported by colleagues Corrina and Tom. They quickly established that the man was not breathing and administered CPR, using a defibrillator to resuscitate him.

Their coordinated efforts, alongside support from other team members and emergency services, ensured he received life-saving care before being transferred to the Royal United Hospital in Bath by ambulance.
