MELKSHAM has another big party to add to its summer calendar this year, as a town picnic will be held on King George V playing field to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday in June.
The Queen’s Tea Party Picnic will be a free public event from midday on Sunday 12th June, when communities across the country will be holding similar events to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday.
Organiser and deputy town clerk Miriam Zaccarelli said, “This will be a totally informal event; we’re excited about it and are expecting it be very popular. People always turn out for a royal celebration, and Melksham has such a lovely community spirit that big events like this always get loads of people involved.
“There will be tea, coffee and soft drinks available to buy and people are welcome to bring their own picnics, tables, chairs and blankets to enjoy the afternoon.
“The whole country will be celebrating so that will really add to the atmosphere, and we’re proud to be a part of it. We are also asking people to make bunting to decorate the park, so even people who can’t come to the party will be able to get involved.”
Queen Elizabeth II turned 90 on 21st April and is the longest reigning and longest living monarch in British history, having become queen in 1952 aged 25. Her ‘official’ birthday is observed each year in June.
