WILTSHIRE Council is proposing to create a permanent taxi rank outside Lloyd’s Bank on the High Street, to help relieve the pressure on the Market Place.
The new taxi rank will create four new parking spaces for taxis. Deputy mayor, cllr Jon Hubbard met with representatives of Wiltshire Council last week to discuss the plans.
Talking to Melksham News, he said, “This will utilise what was the temporary taxi rank when the Market Place works were going on, and that will relieve the pressure in the Market Place, because in reality there is less parking available for them (taxi drivers) than there was before.
“We are hoping the advertisement for the ‘Road Order’ will go out imminently for this. So we shouldn’t be too far from having this completed.
“A ‘Road Order’ is necessary as we are putting something in that is legally enforceable. Putting a taxi rank there means that if you were to park there, you would get a ticket. Effectively we are creating a by-law saying that you cannot park there. Although you cannot park there now anyway as there are double-yellow lines, but a lot of people don’t quite realise that.”
Once the ‘Road Order’ has been advertised, the public will be welcome to share their comments, which may influence the final decision.
