FOR the second year running the Melksham community has helped make it a record-breaking year for the town’s Poppy Appeal.
With only a few collection tins yet to be counted, the total has already passed £20,000. The figure is £4,000 above the town’s previous best recorded in 2013, with much of the money raised through collection tins across Melksham. The remainder of the cash was raised through donations from organisations.
Kenneth Graham of the Royal British Legion and organiser of Melksham’s Poppy Appeal said, “We are absolutely thrilled with the amount raised; it is amazing.
“We only have a few collection tins yet to come in but to have raised over £20,000 is fantastic and it is down to the generosity of the Melksham community. The centenary has been a factor in making it a record-breaking year, but it is still far more than we could have wished for. The main reason is because the people of the Melksham community have pulled together and we are very grateful. Our thanks to all the sellers and helpers for this year.”
The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign. This year, they hope nationally to reach a national target of £40million and donations are welcome all year round.
