Pupils show support for classmate with cystic fibrosis

Children at a local primary school marked Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Day in support of a Year 5 pupil with the condition.

Pupils at St Mary’s School in Broughton Gifford wore yellow to school recently in solidarity with Sophie Maidment.

To educate her fellow pupils, Sophie gave talks to the rest of the school about the challenges she faces daily, such as taking medication and using a nebuliser.

A member of the Friends of the School, Charlotte Godsiffe, said, “We were enormously proud of Sophie on the day as she self-assuredly gave talks to the rest of the school.

“Sophie has had a bit of a difficult year with several hospital visits, so it was absolutely wonderful to see her so confidently and happily telling the other children about CF.

“Sophie and her family raised a whopping £605 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust on the day by selling cakes and homemade yellow 3D-printed animals – these are currently all the rage at St Mary’s. She is our little hero in yellow.”

Cystic fibrosis is a rare inherited genetic condition that causes breathing and digestive problems. Symptoms are managed through daily medication, physiotherapy and regular hospital visits.
