A record field of over 400 runners lined up for the fifth running of the Wiltshire 10 road race in Melksham on Sunday 15th February.

The race was sponsored by The Wiltshire Times and this year hosted the National Road Running Championships of the Association of Running Clubs.

George Frost of Team Bath and George Gurney from Broughton Gifford led the field out of Melksham, with the Avon Valley Runners pair of Rich Ayling and Mike Rose in pursuit, who in turn were tracked by the in-form Allister Sheffield of Team Bath.

As the field approached Bewley Common on the outskirts of Lacock, Frost made his move and managed to open up a winning lead over Gurney and went on to take victory in 54-minutes and 12-seconds, whilst Sheffield overhauled the AVR pair at Reybridge to take third place, and with club mates Roland Teare and Stuart Henderson helped Team Bath to take the Men’s team prize.

Finishing in fourth place Rich Ayling from Melksham was the first ARC runner to finish and took the championship gold medal, with club mate Mike Rose the silver and sixth place Stephen O’Halloran of Bristol’s Great Western Runners, the bronze. Avon Valley Runners took the ARC team gold with Pete Slade and Justin Peters joining Ayling and Rose on the podium.

In the Ladies race, Fiona Price had another great run to take outright victory and the ARC gold medal recording 64:10 ahead of Anna Seymour of Calne SMaRTT and Jenny MacMaster of Great Cheverell. Team Bath packed well to take the team prize in the main race with Karen Butler, Beccy Tarling and Debbie Heywood taking the honours ahead of Avon Valley Runners who along with Price, Diane Hier and Sarah Jewers claimed the gold medal in the ARC team championships.

In 48th place overall Clive Allen of Chippenham Harriers become the 1,000th finisher in the Wiltshire 10 and received a trophy for his efforts.

Other prize winners:

1st MV40 – Stephen O’Holloran of Great Western Runners; 1st MV50 – Niall Urquhart of Team Bath; 1st MV60 – Keith Robinson of Frome Running Club.

  • Community figures honoured at Buckingham Palace garden parties

Melksham community figures have attended Buckingham Palace garden parties in recognition of their work.

Volunteers Jeanette and Mike Nash, and business coach and King’s Trust mentor Neil Stewart, were invited to separate events hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla in May.

Jeanette and Mike Nash, who run the Singin’ Group, attended on Tuesday 12th May after receiving a British Empire Medal in the King’s Birthday Honours List last year for services to the Melksham community.

Over the past 30 years, they have supported numerous local groups and raised thousands of pounds for charities.

The Mystery of Spero Lodge

What does Masonic Lodge No 6825 in Essex have to do with Melksham Hospital on Spa Road

The first was consecrated on 20th April 1949; the latter was declared open by the Marquess of Bath on 27th July 1938. Is this clue any help with the answer? No?

How about the name “Spero”, which in Latin means “I Hope”. Got the reference now?

Even if I help you with an answer, you’re still not going to get it.

They are both contained in Spero Lodge. Actually, that’s not quite true. The answer, unless someone very clever does know, is that I can find no relation except for the name “Spero” and even then, dear readers, you are probably still scratching your head.

Spero aliquem mihi dicere posse.

Translation: “I hope someone can tell me.”

  • Tributes paid to Melksham rugby player

Tributes have been shared for a long-standing player at Melksham Rugby Club who has died aged 42.

Phil Stone died suddenly on Wednesday 20th May. He had been a member of Melksham Rugby Club for 18 years and was described as a ‘multi-talented’ player, having a playing career spanning the 1st team through to coaching.

His children Gwion, 18, and Addien, 16, have launched a fundraiser to help cover funeral costs.

They said, “Our dad was a funny man. He lit up every room he walked into. His laugh could be heard from miles away and we still hear it as if he were still with us.

“We miss his sarcasm and his constant jokes. He always said what he wanted and was never afraid to say it loud and clear. He loved a crowd and attention and we want to be able to give him that one last time.”

To take advantage of the scheme, visitors will be required to present valid proof of an active parking ticket to a participating business: Gompels Pharmacy or Wiltshire Framing. Accepted evidence includes a photo of the physical ticket or confirmation via the MiPermit app.

The business will then reimburse the cost directly to the visitor and later reclaim the charges from Melksham Town Council.
