The Round House, a Grade II listed building in the heart of Melksham town centre, has undergone repairs and has now re-opened as the home of the Community Larder and Community Wardrobe.
On the edge of the Prince of Wales Garden, the Round House has undergone urgent pointing work and stabilisation to maintain the historic appearance and integrity of the building on Church Street, which was built in the 18th century.
Initially a wool-drying room, it has had many other uses over the years, including an armoury for the local volunteer militia, a feed store and, more recently, the Tourist Information Centre and a business premises.
To get it ready for opening, the members of the Community Larder helped out in a spring clean before moving back into the Round House on Thursday 12th April, after a period of running the service out of the Melksham Assembly Hall.
Organiser of the Larder, Adrienne Westbrook said, “Wow, what an amazing difference the work has made. It has truly made a huge difference to such an iconic building. The local stone mason team has brought the area back to life. We look forward to being back there and letting Melksham people see and use this wonderful building.”
