ROLL UP! ROLL UP! AVON BOWLS CLUB BIG BOWLS WEEKEND

AVON Bowls Club  will be  opening on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th May 2021 for the Big Bowls Weekend and invite the public to enjoy a taste of flat green bowls with session from 2-4pm on both days.

The club report, “Bowling is a game for all ages, is easy to learn, keeps you fit and gets you out into the fresh air. Guidance will be available from experienced members. Refreshments will be available throughout.  No fee to pay, just wear flat shoes or trainers.”

  • Historic town hall clock to be illuminated The town hall clock will be illuminated to ensure it remains a prominent and attractive feature of the building, particularly during the darker months. Councillors voted in favour of lighting the clock at a recent Asset Management and Facilities meeting of Melksham Town Council. Following the meeting, Cllr Adrienne Westbrook, chair of the committee, said, “The town hall clock is an important historic feature of a Grade II listed building and had only recently been repaired after a period of downtime.   • Melksham couple win bronze in top tourism awards A Melksham couple who run a hiking company have been awarded bronze at a regional tourism awards ceremony. Alison and David Howell are the founders of Foot Trails, a hiking tours and walking holidays company. They have been awarded bronze in the International Tourism category of the Bristol, Bath, Somerset and Gloucestershire Tourism Awards, which were hosted by BBC Radio Bristol presenter Laura Rawlings. The award was presented to Foot Trails by sponsors Bristol Airport at a glittering ceremony held on 20th November in Bath. A total of 130 organisations and companies entered the awards this year.   • Popular musician hangs up microphone after 30 years A popular musician in Melksham is due to perform one last gig in the town before retiring after 30 years on the road. Antigua Joe, who plays Caribbean music covers, will perform a farewell gig at the Littlebrook Centre, outside Antico Caffe, on Saturday 13th December. “I have been on the road for 30 years and now I am nearly 75 years old. It is time to hang up my microphone and start to enjoy life a bit more,” he said. Antigua Joe has played in Melksham since 2013, performing at the Littlebrook Centre around 20 times and in several local pubs and hotels. He now lives in Dorset and is taking time to rest.   • Three wins on the bounce for new manager 22nd November Melksham Town 2-0 Bideford AFC In what was officially Stuart Fleetwood’s first game inside the dugout, Melksham welcomed visitors Bideford to a wet Meads of Melksham Community football stadium. For much of the first half, it was a very even affair. Both sides struggling for confidence near the bottom of the table but as the half wore on, Melksham gradually grew into the game. Their first clear chance fell in the 34th minute – a promising cross from the right by Will Christopher found a perfect opening, yet poor communication between Lawrence and Stan Wyatt meant the opportunity was wasted.   • Local fundraiser raises nearly £20,000 for mental health charity A local woman has raised nearly £20,000 for Wiltshire Mind with her third annual event to highlight men’s mental health. Melanie Steele has run fundraising events called ‘Operation Gold Dust’ for the last three years, following the deaths by suicide of two male models she knew from bridal catwalks. Wiltshire Mind supports the mental health and wellbeing of anyone in the community and has helped bring attention to men’s mental health. “Suicide is a difficult, sensitive subject but I wanted to raise awareness of the need for more funding for mental health services, especially for men,” said Melanie, a Shaw resident who is a self-employed reflexologist. “We had two of our male catwalk models take their own lives over a space of a couple of years. They were both wonderful, beautiful men who appeared to have everything to live for. I hope that by talking about it, we can bring help closer to men and women and ensure funding is available when it is needed.” Read more on our website. The link is in our bio
  • Empty shop becomes pop-up community space for Advent An empty shop on Bank Street will be transformed into a pop-up community space with crafts and storytelling to celebrate Advent, opening on Saturday mornings. The building, at 21 Bank Street on the high pavement, has been rented for the month by a group offering crafts, storytelling and Christmas fun from 10am to 12pm on 6th, 13th and 20th December. The shop front will also display an Advent calendar counting down the days until Christmas. One of the organisers, John Firth, said, “We have decided to bring the message of Christmas to the high street. Stop by and have a look. Christians from all over Melksham are working together to make this a welcoming and fun place on these Saturday mornings.   • Christmas lights fundraiser to support local boy Residents in Melksham East have adorned their house with Christmas lights and decorations to raise funds for a three-year-old boy who has a rare degenerative brain disease. The house on Rosemary Way is covered with hundreds of colourful lights and decorations, including inflatables and a snow machine, to support local boy Drae Mead-Strong, who is in urgent need of mobility aids at home. The lights were switched on on Saturday 29th November and will be on every evening from 5pm until around the New Year. There will also be special appearances from Father Christmas.   • Poppy Appeal raises over £30,000 This year’s Poppy Appeal in Melksham has raised over £30,000 through donations from individuals and a generous contribution from a local business. Volunteers from the Melksham branch of the Royal British Legion were out and about this year selling poppies for the UK-wide armed forces charity, which provides lifelong support to serving personnel, veterans and their families. Over a two-week period, volunteers sold poppies in Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Lidl, raising a total of £19,118.65. Schools in Melksham and Atworth also raised £1,818.85 and donations from individuals and organisations came to £345. Read more on our website. The link is in our bio
  • Fundraising Christmas lights display opens at Sarum Avenue The fundraising Christmas lights on Sarum Avenue have officially been switched on, featuring the UK’s largest illuminated Father Christmas sculpture. This year’s lights were switched on on Sunday 30th November and will be on every night in the run-up to Christmas from 5pm to 9pm, with Father Christmas and his elves out every Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening. Residents have adorned their houses in lights, with some making festive displays to raise funds for the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance Charity; last year the residents raised £16,000 and this year they are hoping to exceed their target with a ‘bigger and better’ display. New this year is a large, illuminated Father Christmas sculpture, which is 5m high and 5m wide, taking up a footprint of nearly 40sqm and adorned with over 10,000 lights, as well as a set of six-foot homemade candy canes displayed on a resident’s driveway.
