CARNIVAL celebrations for 2022 have begun with the crowning of this year’s Melksham Carnival Royalty.
Melksham Carnival Queen 2022 is Debbie Holman and Carnival Princess 2022 is 14-year old Grace Povey.
“I feel honoured to be crowned Melksham’s carnival queen,” said new carnival queen Debbie, “I hope I leave glitter everywhere I go!
“In my role I hope to ‘big up’ the community spirit, especially after the last couple of years that we have had; and I look forward to representing the community in the run up to the procession in June.”
The Melksham junior carnival royalty was also chosen at the event, with eight-year old Megan Thomas crowned Butterfly Princess and six-year old Darcey Corbett crowned Fairy Princess. This year’s Page is seven-year old Henry Holman.
The new carnival royalty were crowned at a ‘Jubilee afternoon tea’, which was free to attend, thanks to a grant from Melksham Town Council.
The event marked the return of the carnival to the town, after an absence of two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic – the last procession was held in the summer of 2019.
This year’s carnival will take place on Saturday 25th June, and with the royalty crowning completed, the carnival committee is now focussed on making the procession one to remember.
A committee member has told Melksham News that in the coming weeks they will be inviting groups and businesses to submit their applications to take part in the procession.
