THE ongoing pandemic has not been able to stop local Scouting groups from keeping active
District Commissioner, Chris Broom, reports, “Scouting is active in Wiltshire West. Many groups from the outset of the pandemic embraced the continuation of Scouting and in March 2020 the first group to go online were Broughton Gifford & Holt Explorers.
“During April there was an abundance of activities with #campathome and St George’s Day events with Beavers, Cubs and Leaders flying the flag to celebrate. Shaw & Whitley Beavers. Cubs and Leaders were out and about flying the flag and at the same time taking part in the ‘Hike to the Moon’ and ‘The Great Outdoors’.
“There have been virtual camps and the District Explorers did four challenges, baking, creating, cooking, pioneering – and lots of absolutely wonderful creations appeared, there was no end to their creativity and talent.
“Our District Youth Commissioner (DYC), Mollie Beales ran a photograph competition for a District calendar with some wonderful submissions – the dark nights saw sections with sparklers making abstract shapes. The 1st Bowerhill Scouts have been active at Giles Wood and the 1st Bowerhill Beavers have been pond dipping at Jubilee Wood.
“Broughton Gifford & Holt Scouts and Explorers have been out and about – they got out the tents, hammocks and tarps, in hopeful preparation for summer camp. Melksham and Broughton Gifford & Holt Beavers have enjoyed having a go at archery and hiking along the canal, enjoying the outdoors.
“The Scout District is going from strength to strength and once more restrictions are lifted our spirits will soar and we will continue to give young people ‘The Skills for Life’.
“The District is currently wishing to recruit as part of the District Team a Treasurer and a Secretary.
“If you think you have these skills and are willing to join an enthusiastic team please contact Chris Broom at dc-wiltshirewest@wiltshirescouts.org.uk or via the web site www.wiltshire westscouts.org.”
