See the bluebell display at West Woods this Saturday

ENJOY  a gentle walk through the bluebell display at West Woods near Marlborough this Saturday, 29th April with a local group.

West Woods is famed for spectacular carpets of bluebells in spring – why not see them for yourself.

The route will be on good woodland paths but sensible footwear is recommended. The meeting point will be the lay-by on the Devizes Road just past the Oak School, leaving at 2.15pm. Further details can be obtained from 01225 708315. Donations towards the work of Christian Aid would be appreciated.

  • Drivers pay £54,000 in fines for using Semington bus gate Drivers have paid more than £54,000 in fines to Wiltshire Council for unlawfully using Semington’s bus gate to access Semington village. Since the installation of an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera last year, 1,563 fines have been issued at £35 each, totalling £54,705. The camera was installed by Wiltshire Council at the request of Semington Parish Council, in consultation with Melksham Without Parish Council, following reports of drivers regularly ignoring the restrictions and using the gate as a cut-through. The two parish councils had agreed to cover the ongoing running costs of the camera – estimated at £2,000 from next year.   • ‘No dogs’ signs installed at Forest Community Centre after rise in dog fouling Forest Community Centre has installed ‘no dogs’ signs on its playing field following a surge in dog fouling over the past six months. Volunteers say they were repeatedly forced to clean up large amounts of dog mess before clubs could use the field, prompting health and safety concerns – particularly for children. The situation led to postponed football matches and several complaints from parents and coaches. In an open letter to the community, the centre said it had been left with ‘no other option’, describing one incident in particular as the tipping point. “A little girl was playing football and fell over,” explained committee member Tina. “She had long blonde hair and when she stood up, it was all matted with dog mess.   • Tennis club’s open day welcomes residents for games and refreshments Melksham Tennis Club is holding an open day on Sunday 25th May, giving residents the chance to have a go at the sport. The event is free, and will run from 10am to 2pm, with the following sessions: from 10am to 11am junior session; 11am to 12pm, cardio tennis games; 12pm to 1pm exhibition match; 1pm to 2pm adults have-a-go-session. Residents can also enjoy a BBQ and cakes. A sports massage therapist will also be in attendance for advice.   • Bowls’ Big Weekend coming to Broughton Gifford The Bowls’ Big Weekend is due to take place at Broughton Gifford Bowls Club this month. Everybody is welcome to attend the open day sessions and try out the game of bowls free-of-charge. “We would welcome newcomers and returning bowlers alike,” says member of the club, Mervyn Davies. “Our ladies and gentlemen members will be on hand to offer advice and answer any questions which may arise.” Broughton Gifford Bowls Club is among 814 clubs affiliated to Bowls England which have registered to host the Bowls’ Big Weekend, which taking place on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May.   • Melksham welcomes new mayoral team Melksham has a new mayoral team for the year ahead, with Cllr Saffi Rabey appointed as town mayor and Cllr Jennie Westbrook named as her deputy. The pair were selected at the full town council meeting on Monday 12th May, where Cllr Rabey pledged in her speech to serve the town with ‘dedication, integrity and a steadfast commitment to our shared future.’ Cllr Rabey joined the council in 2021 and served as deputy mayor last year. Cllr Westbrook joined the council in 2023 following a by-election and has recently been elected as a Wiltshire councillor. At the meeting, Cllr Rabey thanked the outgoing mayor, Tom Price, for his leadership and “tireless” service over the past year, and pledged her commitment to the town.   • Melksham man honoured at Buckingham Palace for 55 years of volunteering A volunteer from Melksham has been recognised at Buckingham Palace for 55 years of service to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), in a special celebration hosted by the current Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward. Steve Coles, who has supported thousands of young people to develop new skills and build their self-belief, completed his own Gold DofE Award in 1973 and has been volunteering his time for the charity for over 55 years. He joined thousands of other volunteers, award holders and their loved ones at the palace on Monday 12th May for a festival-style celebration. Throughout his decades of service, Steve has helped countless young people as a DofE expedition assessor, trainer and mentor. He also spent 12 years as the DofE manager for the Sea Cadets, where he saw over 11,000 young people begin their award journey and more than 3,000 complete it.   • Guide groups begin fundraising drive to save Guide Hut from closure Melksham Guides have launched a major fundraising campaign to raise £25,000 for vital roof repairs to their Guide Hut – or risk losing their long-standing home. The Guide Hut, located off Bath Road near King George V Park, is facing serious issues due to a leaking roof. Without the necessary repairs, the building will become unsafe to use and could be forced to close within 18 months, threatening the future of Girlguiding in the town, which dates back to 1922. Built in 1959, the hut hosts weekly meetings for over 100 local girls in Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers. It also supports other community groups, including Slimming World and Melksham Ukulele Club. “A few months ago, some of the parents of the girls who use the hut discovered that there is a serious need for repairs to the building that will ensure its future use – not only for the girls, but also for other hall users,” said Brownie leader Helen Short.   • Semington pupils bury time capsule with help from housebuilder Puplis at St George’s C of E Primary School have buried a special time capsule on their grounds. The activity saw children fill the capsule with drawings, letters and mementos from daily life in 2025. It was organised in partnership with David Wilson Homes South West – which is currently building new homes off Semington Road – to help capture a snapshot of the present day for future generations. As part of the celebration, the housebuilder also presented the school with more than £500 worth of books from Usborne Books to its library, to help encourage a lifelong love of reading among the 91 pupils that attend the school from reception up to Year 6.   • Melksham golfers raise vital funds for Dorothy House at regional tournament Passionate golfers from Melksham have raised over £500 for Dorothy House Hospice Care, surpassing the group’s initial fundraising target. The Melksham Grinders Golf Association held a tournament at the prestigious Nicklaus and Kernow courses at St Mellion Estate in Cornwall recently, where they played against golfers from across the region. The aim was to raise funds for Dorothy House Hospice Care, which recently launched the ‘Together in Adversity’ campaign, highlighting the charity’s critical financial shortfall and its urgent need for support. “As a team, we come together not just for the love of golf but to make a difference in our community,” said James Dix, spokesperson for the club. “Whether it’s through charity tournaments, fundraising challenges, or simply spreading awareness, we believe in using our passion for golf to help those in need.
